I came from New Hampshire and have a ton of experience backpacking and WFR cert. I really want to learn mountaineering out here, but don't have a budget for guides and am lost on where to start otherwise. Any help much appreciated!
Thank you so much!

Hi Sam,
Welcome out West! Where in the northwest are you? What kind of Mountaineering are you looking to learn? If you are looking for like minded people your best bet is to get a membership at a climbing gym, be humble, outgoing and willing to learn. A gym is a safe place to learn technical skills and meet people who are willing to teach you more than gym climbing. If you're in the Portland area and looking for a gym I'd be happy to be a belay partner and go from there. However, you will be hard pressed to find (and should be suspect of) someone who is willing to teach you like a guide for free. Hope that's helpful.

Unless you happen to meet someone who does mountaineering and wants to teach you, it's going to be hard to get away without paying anything.

Here's a group that you can take classes with, that is going to be way cheaper than a guide and they're in Oregon:

Thanks Gabrielle and Frank! I've been putting feelers out everywhere to see if anyone was interested bringing along a newbie. I live near Newport OR so have been visiting the rock gyms at Corvallis. Lots of great people there. Enjoy your days!
