Great place to stay for ice climbers in the S. Fork outside Cody, WY.

Hey y'all,

I'm posting this on behalf of the caretakers of the Flying H Ranch in the South Fork Valley, about an hour outside of Cody, Wyoming.

If you've ever climbed ice in this amazing and wild setting, you know what a drag it is to have a great day and then endure the hour+ drive back to Cody for your hotel. During a snowstorm, this drive can become more than an inconvenience. Driving back the next morning to climb ice in the South Fork sucks, because now you're thinkin' gas for those back-and-forths, cost of hotel, time (in addition to whatever you spent to get to Cody) is the true cost of climbing there.

Here's a great alternative to all of that driving. The caretakers offer accommodations on a beautiful ranch overlooking the river, with great access to climbs such as Mean Green, High on Boulder, Moonrise, etc. (without having to sketch your way across the river), with a full kitchen, beds and a place to dry out your stuff. My group has stayed there several times, and the average cost per night for each person has always come out to around $25-$30 per night. That's likely cheaper than what you would pay for a hotel (per person) driving all the way back to Cody.

If you're interested in doing this during the current climbing season, give 'em a call soon as they are planning on closing up shop after
MLK weekend coming up for the season if they don't get some interest. Surprisingly they are not getting as much business as deserved. Our experience has been great, and I highly recommend this as an alternative to staying in Cody.

I certainly would be interested, but it would be nice if they had some details and pictures posted somewhere for people to look at.
The Double X ranch also has accommodations in the valley, but they are crazy expensive and without kitchen access. They do have a nice website with all the details though (www.ddxranchwyoming.com) so they are probably getting most of the attention via web searches (but likely little business due to cost).

Do they have wifi?

They do not have wifi. The place really is not set up as a vacation destination. I suppose they would be getting more business if they did, but it
it would also be more expensive. It is a great place to come back to after climbing, cooking up, drying your stuff out and getting a good night's sleep, and then get ready to repeat the next day.

Think more along the lines of authentic ranch bunkhouse. I would encourage you to contact Rhonda at the Flying H with questions.

here are a few pics from Dec 2012 when I was up there. I live in town but when you have a big group it is nice to stay @ Flying- H.
Dean & Rhonda Dunlap are down to earth good people and provide a nice comfortable place to stay!
Flying-H- Ranch is a room with a view and the full access kitchen and laundry is priceless for multi-day stays. You can leave your cabin and hike to the Hunter Creek climbs and go all the way over to HOB and not cross the river.....
Enjoy & Climb Safe! Don Foote JR.
