Petzl Quark Hardware

Hey guys, I recently snagged an older used pair of Petzl Quarks. These are the pre 2011 version, before they switched to the simpler head design. Two questions here.

1) I'm looking to switch out the adze for a hammer, but the guy who used em before me stripped the hell out of one of the bolts. Its not even remotely hex shaped anymore. I can tap the bolt and get it off, but that bolt is ruined. Do companies usually ship the hardware (bolts and nuts) for the attachment as well, or is it assumed that you already have that hardware when you bought the tool. And if not, does anyone know if Petzl sells nuts and bolts, or should I just go snag some from a local hardware store and trim the bolt length down as necessary.

2) Will the old handle model fit the picks for the newer version? Or do I need to be careful to make sure I buy the right picks for these old tools.

Thanks guys!

If you have the older version, the new Ice picks won't work. You need to buy the "Cascade" picks. They usually come with the screws, washers with the pick.

If your tools look like this:

Then you'll need this:

You can get them at EMS here .

Thanks very much divnamite! That is exactly the info I was looking for. And if they come with the hardware I'll be good to go. Appreciate the help.

I sent you a PM- I happen to have a set of hammers/adzes with hardware for sale.

Depending where you are you'll have a hard time finding the screws and nuts.
On the new Quarks they're metric grade 10.9 low head socket head cap screws M8x12.
DIN 7984-10.9
The old and new Quarks seem to use the same hardware as per Needle Sports #69108 product info.

I need to use a small wrench to tighten mine, or else the blade shifts and chews up the thread.
Kinda stupid design to have the blade rest on the screw thread for alignment, I would have designed the head and picks to use shoulder screws but the short length may be an issue...

The new Ice Picks will fit the old quarks... a lot of people have been saying you need the old cascade pick, but this isn't so. It's a tight squeeze, and the bolt holes barely line up, but they do, and it does work just fine.

This is all good to know. Thanks guys. I eventually was able to tap the stripped bolt and get it out, and found the older version hammers on mountain gear, which come with a pair of bolts. So the tools are good to go for now, just in time for the ice here in the mid-atlantic. But I'll probably be looking for a new pair of picks by the end of the season, these tools were an old rental pair used by a guide company, so the picks are pretty trashed. That info about the newer models fitting will be helpful if/ when the cascade picks start getting hard to find. Is there a significant difference between the new picks and the older cascade picks? The cascades are still relatively easy to find, so I'll probably just stick with them for now unless the newer model is a significant improvement.

The older picks i.e. the correct ones for the tools you have, are "half as thick" in the rear so that a hammer or adze can be mounted. I doubt the new Quark pick will allow that (but I don't have the hardware in front of me to verify this).

I use old quarks with hammers and the new picks. No issue.

Well I stand corrected then.

Using new picks in old Quarks requires the supplied spacer. It is not a perfect fit, there will be a gap at the base of the of the head where the new pick does not come down as far. The question is why use them when you can buy brand new Quark Cascade picks?

I was wondering if the new picks were superior picks as compared to the cascade picks. Are they made of a better alloy that makes them stronger, lighter etc that would make it worth the trouble of shoving them in the old tools. But it sounds like they're pretty comparable. So I'll likely stick with the cascade picks.

The original picks were practically indestructible. They stick well and clean like a dream. Several folks feel the new Quarks do not perform as well as a pure ice tool (lots of possible reasons for that incl. weight, shaft angle etc) but it's clear that the new picks need to be tweaked to get back to the sweet performance of the original.

I think the Cascades are probably better for the old Quarks. Namely, they fit without spacers. I think the bolts are the same as the new Quarks so you should be able to swap your stripped units.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
