Camping near Frankenstein Cliff

I'm venturing up there in a couple days to do some ice climbing, and my friends and I are hoping to camp somewhere within ~20 mins of the crag.

Do you guys or gals know of any good spots? Looks like there's a campground in Crawford Notch State park, but it's not "in season" right now and not staffed...does that mean it's still okay to camp there?

Thanks for the advice.

I've seen a few cars parked at the forth iron campsite in the winter but the lot never seems to be fully plowed. I'm not sure I would really want to camp outside anyhow..

Stay at the AMC Highland Center...cheap money and warm...

Is it really $106 per person per night for nonmember?

The little motels in Twin Mountain are perfect for this. I've tried the winter camping thing, and the easiest thing to do there is to sleep in your car in one of the trailhead parking lots. The Crawford Path parking lot has an outhouse and is right at the top of the Notch.

The Carroll Motel in Twin Mountain has decent rooms for a decent price. I've been staying there when I want to make an extended trip to the Notch.

Intervale Inn is $50/night if you offer cash. It's across from the Mt Washington lookout

Winter car camping in the Whites is pretty grim..I would go for The Intervale suggestion..so many more facilities in NConway area.

i don't think that the commercial campgrounds in Crawford Notch are open in winter ??

It's going to be REALLY cold this week. Unless you have serious winter grade camping gear I would not advise it.

Camp in your car at a trailhead or go for Priceline express deals....good luck!

Yeah, temps are bad. We're coming up late tonight so we're gonna car bivy for a few hours (we have warm stuff) and then stay in Bartlett. Thanks for the beta. See you guys out there, great to see the ice coming back out.

Cabin Fever restaurant is a great spot to eat if you guys are staying in Bartlett.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
