Metolius Rainfly modification

So I am putting this out there first: it seems like the BD rainfly is better.

So I am rather unhappy with my Metolius rainfly, mostly because it has poor ventilation and no doors. Does anybody feel the same way, or do these seem like large shortcomings of a tent?

So here is my crazy idea and question. Has anybody modified their Metolius rainfly? I am talking about buying a heavy duty zipper, sewing it it with extra material to cover up the zipper and then seam-sealing the new stitching? Is this crazy or could it work if you knew what you were doing?

Installing zippers and a stormflap are non-trivial, for a variety of different reasons. If you have some experience sewing, have at it, but recognize that you might be better served just buying the BD rainfly.

Useful things to keep in mind: the seam allowance at the corners is only enough for the way the fly is designed now, so you'll probably need to cut directly into the face to add that zipper. Adding the storm flap will add just as many holes to the tent as adding the zipper, so be thorough with your seam sealing. Get inside and out. Don't bother with coil zippers, or waterproof zippers. They will break when you need them most. Get big, toothy zippers.

Thanks for the advice, I think going with a big beefy zipper is key. I am going to think about this quite a bit before I even start, input from others is appreciated.

Keep in mind that God hath provided man with Seam Grip, Justin.
