Front point length

Need advice. I went climbing yesterday and felt sort of like my front points were too long. How much front point age do you want? Seeing as you barely get a 1/4 of an inch of purchase, it seems to me smarter to have less than more which can pivot on you or fatigue your calves.

Thanks

Right is slightly shorter.

It depends...

For hard and hero ice, shorter. For soft or sun rotted ice, longer.

Generally longer, you can always kick deeper to get the secondaries in properly. I think Dane had a comment about point length, you can check his blog.

There's more advantages to having them longer, unless you're dry-tooling and even then, the shorter point may allow the sole of the boot to lever you off.
I used to keep my M10 with a longer point at the big toe and shorter outside.

Barely 1/4 inch? That's WAY too short. I can sink my FPs (note - they're monos) a good inch in any sort of ice.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
