The agony of recovery, (Advice?)

Hey MP,

its the holiday season and I recently took part of a construction company "Christmas Celebration", the wives and children were not invited with good reasons, as there were about 3 half gallons of crown royal being passed around rowdy construction workers in a cheery merriment that quickly turned to drunken debauchery. A white elephant gift exchange commenced and the knives, the socket sets, the airsoft pistols all became apart of the "scene" that was beginning to take place.

SO, the exchange ends and I (sitting between the two bosses sons at the "Drunk" table)
keep getting shot point blank with the airsoft guns (these things are powerful these days), I warn shooter that if anyone shoots me in the back point blank again that I will "forcible take them to the ground". It happened, I took him to the ground. I'm about a buck sixty and he's something over 210, we rolled around at the christmas party like buffoons and eventually got it broken up, (I still have my job)

in the morning, after all the raucous I seemed to have torn, or seperated, or strained (whatever) the muscle right above my right hip, an oblique? or lat that runs down my side. Its basically a core muscle that I use to poop, to pull, to clench, to sneeze and to laugh. Its really getting me down, as that i was just breaking into the 5.13 range in boulder canyon and really feeling psyched and strong.

Now Its by no means my first time being injured and having to wait it out, but MY QUESTION to all you out there who read my short little story is how do you speed muscle recovery up personally..

How do you deal with the agony of recovery?
What do you find is the best way to spend your time actively recovering,
How do you cope with the obvious bummer that results in knowing you're losing the edge you've worked for the last months sharpening?

Nutrition?
Supplements?
tips for sanity?
stories for motivation?

it comes back right? or am I going to have to 4plan 5.10s for months now.

Thanks for reading,
from, it hurts to clench

After reading your post, I can come to only one piece of advice...START LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB!
This will speed your recovery and prevent further injuries.

I was infront of all the important powerful figures in the job hierarchy and they all heard me warn this guy.

I shouldn't have elaborated on the story, as it's not the important part of this post, but i'm stuck on my computer and theres too much snow in boulder to ride my bike to get out and hike so I'm stuck shooting the shit with you all and your virtual identities

Hey.

Make sure you don't actually have an abdominal hernia. You could be in for a lot worse than just having to take time off climbing.

Ps. Did you check if this qualifies you for workman's compensation?

You need to avoid pooping. At least, try not to strain and push too hard. :)

I don't think I could get any workers comp even though I was in the right, as I was the one who threw him to the ground first.

I don't suspect a hernia as there is no bulge, or abnormality in the area of pain.
Its usually something you'd be able to see a sign of I think or atleast feel some kind of lump and i'm not getting any of that thankfully, however i have no been clinically checked/diagnosed.

I want to eat a lot of protein to encourage the muscle growth but its making for really uncomfortable bowels.

I sneezed this morning and i feel like I completely reopened it, felt a pop and sharp pain in the process..

You may want to bind the area or press firmly into it when you cough/sneeze/poop. If it's more internal than that, you could take fiber and stool softeners (OTC) to at least help with the pooping issue. I don't believe either is habit forming, and most women are put on the latter postpartum because of stitches.

And goes to prove what i said ages ago about you and drinking...don't do it!! (So much)
HA!!

THC reduces inflamation. Do muscles grown just from eating protein?

When I find myself on the injured list, I like to read up on and practice skills that I might need one day when I'm back climbing (e.g., self-rescue, wilderness first aid).

Good luck being patient long enough to heal up.

So you're guessing with self diagnosis and asking the forum to guess on your treatment. And you seem to think that eating lots of protein encourages muscle growth.
See a doctor. Go to an insta-clinic or something.

I injured that a similar muscle about a year and a half ago. Mine was caused by an ill-considered deadpoint, but the result was the same. It hurt (a lot) to climb, to sneeze, to roll over in bed. I consulted with a doctor (translation: I called up my sister, who happens a doctor), and she basically told me to buck up and deal with it. Since it is on the side, it shouldn't be a hernia. Abdominal muscles are pretty robust, and it is hard to get a serious and lasting injury.

I climbed through mine, which may or may not have been a good idea. In any case, it hurt to climb for 1-2 weeks, hurt to roll over in bed for 2-3 weeks, and hurt to sneeze for 3-4 weeks. After ~2 weeks it had no negative impact on my climbing.

I would reccommend you rehab this in the same way that you would any other injury. Start by giving it 7-10 days rest to let any inital trauma and swelling subside, and then begin to gradually stress the area to the point of mild discomfort, but not pain. With most of the sorts of muscle strains, it can feel really awful at first and then quickly subside; you generally should wiat 10 days before freaking out. In all likelihood, by the end of January you will have forgotten this, and it will have no impact on your spring season. However, if it is still really bad after 2 weeks, go to see a doctor.

Hope that is more helpful than the garbage posted above.

This to shall pass. We remember moments, not time.

I spent 5 months in a wheel chair then had to learn to walk. If you want some idea hit me up.

eating extra protein above your normal diet won't do anything. Also I really would get checked out, there are types of hernia that effectively are basically impossible to spot unless you know what to look for. I've had the same thing as you and even an ultrasound didn't spot it, and it's still flares up a little but the docs concluded it couldn't be anything other than a hernia, though they aren't sure of what or where exactly it is. go figure.
