benefit of double ropes over single?

So over the past five years I've climbed on single ropes for top rope, sport, and Trad. The people I've climbed with have used single ropes also. So, I'm curious as to what the benefit of using double ropes would be. I can imagine a reduction in rope drag, plus it'd be easy to use the half ropes for rappel. Perhaps its more beneficial for ice climbing?

Anyways, I'm quite ignorant on the topic and would be interested to hear other people's thoughts.

Gotcha. Sorry I'm not extremely mountain project savvy. How can I go about specifically searching the forums for threads like this [besides obviously scrolling through them]. I might have interpreted the previous comments, but Im left with the impression that there is a search bar specifically for the forums? I tried using the generic search bar in the upper right hand corner of the mountain project page, no luck.

Google is probably your best bet. It's likely that an MP forum will be among the first few results.

FWIW, I wish the MP mobile app had a search function for the forums.

Click ADVANCED next to the Search button at the right of the screen You'll get:

In addition to searching on "half ropes," try also "double ropes." Maybe also "halves" and "doubles."

Probably the best way to find all the "Good" threads on Half Ropes AND the more informative posts is simply to search Rich's post history. Scanning through the forums topics will reveal PLETNY of half rope information... I started on 1/2 ropes in the Gunks and still glean info from my post stalking of Rich's history.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
