  • ***PUBLIC DIS-SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT****

For all of those who are less intrepid (read lazy). Here's Free Beta For you.

Moffatt Tunnel Ice - Thin but IN. Too much water was diverted to try and save the pillar, but it wasn't diverted properly forming a large hanging curtain and now the main flow is anemic and dying.

Hidden Falls - IN. Really sad to go and lead the thing and not find a single screw hole from anyone leading - So go and TR the crap out of it, since that's all that people do there anyway.

Lincoln - BEEN IN. As it is every year since the last ice age. It comes into shape in late October and grows continuously until June EVERY YEAR.

The Overflow/Jewel Lake Ice - IN. Thin in spots, but then again it always is.

Now go forth and hack up every good piece of ice in the Front Range while on TR!

Ryan Edwards wrote:@tenpins, what about any organizations out there that might donate something like that? Ic cascade toboggan a company that might do that? It just seems to me like it would be good to have the rescue gear there and in good repair, but I don't have the ability to replace it myself.
If this is for use as a sled, you could repair it. You can always email cascade toboggan and see, but just off hand, given their unit price, I'd wager no.

SAR teams sometimes have old ones on the shelf somewhere, but they also keep them on hand for contingencies like simultaneous missions or mass casualty.

of course try and determine the owner of this gear first.

I imagine that Lincoln was super fat during the last ice age

Tried to get to the black lake slabs today, we were stopped in our tracks by the obvious blowdown just past jewel lake, which appears to be old news. Is there a new trail around this mess, or is everyone just adding an extra hour of hell trying to post hole through the mess? The wind erased all previous tracks when we arrived this morning to break trail, so there was not any obvious way through it that we could find.

Ivan, Ive been intermittently posting conditions on the Wolf Creek Pass overview page. Bottom line- the pass is in horrible shape. The climbs around Alpha Male as well as Romulus are in but thats about all. Treasure is not formed up.

Booo Booo:( what a lowball, derogatory comment! James, you sound like a pathetic little man. Unless your referring to "gay" as being happy. Yup, just a bunch of happy climbers on here sharing beta and getting stoked!

Once you pass Mill lake you get funnel led into a small meadow. In fresh snow this is where the tracks wander in every direction. The trail is hard right when looking up the canyon. It may take you a little time to find it but it's obvious once you do.

West Gully and Yellow Tears were in fat 12/6 ish. Stone man was in but super brittle. The first curtain was quite blank and chandeliered.

From base of Stone Man.

Drove up there today before seeing Jesse's post. Could have saved some mileage and time as we discovered a very sad looking pass, shitty wet and or non existent routes, along with miles of beetle kill on the pass and the worst snow pack I have ever seen up there.

Hiking out on the road in mtneering boots is demoralizing 2 star route, with a crappy descent
Hey did you access that route via the Echo Lake trail, and was that climb one of the Spaulding climbs? I was up there a few weeks ago and it looked really thin from a distance. Instead of topping out, is a rap off an option? Thanks for the beta (and you are right, the hike out down HWY 5 blows)

I don't know about the Pillar, but there is nothing to climb up Avocado Gully as of December 17...just a little drizzle of incomplete and wet ice on P2, and nothing on the first low angle section.

SW CO update, as of last WE (12/20-21/2014):

  • Skylight area had decent conditions, but was insanely crowded. Ice was good on Sat, though a bit thin in places, particularly top-outs.
  • Ames Ice Hose: fist pitch unusually fat. Rest of climb fat enough, but second pitch was a dripping mess on Sunday...
  • Ice park has a long way to go (looked much worse than a month ago)
  • did not check Silverton/Eureka this time around.
