Looking to try some sport climbing (if possible) this late december/early january if weather permits. What are areas that are good for sport climbing this time of year? I can lead some 5.10s
I have looked a bit and found shelf road, and while this may be an option, I am interested in places closer to Boulder/Denver. I also found some areas at Clear Creek Canyon in Golden that may be an option.
It all so weather dependent its tough to give a definitive place near Denver. For instance, tomorrow will be warm enough to climb most south facing walls in Boulder canyon or clear creek canyon, and table mountain of course. But on Sunday its gonna be 20-30 and snowing. Table is the most reliable in the winter. Almost the entire thing gets sun if its out, and its not subject to the cold winds coming down the canyons like BC and CCC. The crowds are not too bad if you stay away from the easy stuff and brown cloud area. And there are actually some pretty fun 10's there as well. If you have the time go to shelf though.
Highlander in CCC can be good, probably a bit more fun than NTM, in general. The flatirons can be nice down to the 50s if it's sunny out. (The second can be solo'd at 5.0, which keeps you moving fast).
I'm sure there are some south-facing crags in Boulder Canyon. You can just head up the canyon with a guide book and pick one. Wall of Winter Warmth has some nice multi-pitch sport but you might have to bring a few pieces to supplement fixed gear. Also, the approach on that one has changed from years ago when boulder falls was open.
Bowling Alley is pretty sheltered - climbed there on Christmas Day a few years back - we had the place to ourselves. It's only yards from the car, so it's really convenient to check out.
