Daypasses are not the way to go, so I get a single monthly membership; however, I am not going to pay $170 to climb in a gym for a few weeks, that's ridiculous. Startup fees dont actually cover any real expense so it seems like they are just the latest scam to trick people into paying more money than they think. They dont want to charge $90 a month, so they do $70 a month and $70 startup so you think you're only paying $70 a month.
Agree on the startup fees. That is one big reason I chose to join the BRC when I moved to Denver despite it being 50 minutes away from me, instead of Earth Treks which is 20 min away. That, and a regular, reliable, partner who I trust.

Of lesser importance, I prefer rock colored walls to clay red or blue/white walls. I preferred the more low-key people of the BRC to the flashy-looking people of Movement. And while I don't love autobelays, it is nice to know I have an option other than bouldering if my partner can't make it.

Isn't Thrillseekers still open? And the DBC?

That's your real gym value right there. It's like Gym Jones compared to Lifetime Fitness.

Fantastical? It's already been done: summitclimbing.org/

What's stopping ME? Let's see.. I'm not a white upper class male from a white upper class family, for starters. As far as the rest of Denver goes, there are a lot of properly indoctrinated fellows who believe in the myth of the American free market (I'm guessing you believe in this myth). Some of those believers might not welcome a community-run gym and may be in positions that enable them to prevent one from opening. Additionally, those who have an interest in a community-run gym probably do not have a surplus amount of cash - otherwise they would be rejoicing for the blessing in Denver that is Movement. Insurance is expensive, too. In short, money and politics are stopping me. But mostly money.

Do you have any contributions to make? Stay out of Denver. Better yet, move to Texas with all the other "slims."

How is summitclimbing.org any different? They've got a $50 startup fee and $60/month membership.

Rather than Slim moving to Texas, I think you should get your ass over to North Korea. Not much of that nasty old capitalism there. No white privilege either.

Well well, not being white means you can't do shit in Denver? How ignorant is that? PLEASE don't tell this guy:
Or he may not come to the ribbon cutting!

And as for the male and middle class question, you know, I can think of a few people that have overcome that barrier too:

I think your main barrier to opening such a thing in Denver could be that you are not in Denver.

I popped over to The Good Life Blog.

Nothing there made me think the guy is a shill.

He's a dork. Overly excited about dumb stuff. His blog is more bland than a Disney store in an airport.

He's a real estate agent and blogger about how cool it is to be cool in Denver. He probably climbs up to 2 days a year. Give him a break. His sole interest in things like Movement is that can drive the prices of real estate in Denver even higher and make him more money.

Movement certainly doesn't and never did need his advertising. Give the guy a break.

I suppose I fail to see the problem with a successful business from Boulder opening a new and better location in Denver. That's 2 total gyms. Front range owned. With renewable energy they didn't have to install. Employing probably 40 climbers between the two. How is that a problem in any way? Did Big City Burrito sell out when they expanded from FoCo? Is the complaint that it's a "for profit" gym?

There are 2 Rnj's 2 DBC's, Earth Treks, and Thrillseekers. If you don't like the gym, go find one you do. For me, it's the best gym I've ever climbed on. I think I'll go there.

Ah yes, the powerful indoor climbing lobby, aka BIG GYM, will stop at nothing to crush your subversive coop dreams.

I just called CATS in Boulder. They're $5/day or $35/month. I asked if there was a start up fee. She said, "No, we're really low key here."

Yes, Dwight Eisenhower saw this coming when he spoke of his fears over the coming Military Industrial Indoor Climbing Complex. No....wait...

It's not. No one said startup fees are specific to Movement. At the minimum they should offer an alternative. Some offer unlimited climbing passes for non-members. Something like $60 a month and startup for a member, or $70 a month with no startup for just a 30 day pass.

Well, Movement offers just that, so does ET, BRC, The Spot (the only gyms I've been within the last year, so I'm not sure what you are complaining about.

That's exactly what Movement does. $75 startup and $68/month, or $80/month with no startup.

According to Summit's website, non-members can't get a day pass unless accompanied by a member. "Non members can visit the gym with current members for day pass climbing"

Movement, ET, RJ etc don't have that rule. +1 for them, -1 for summit

My point is that this yet another example of how each gym has pros and cons and all gyms differ from each other. I'm glad they are all different. Some are small and cheap. Some are big and $$. Choice is good

Wow. 2 examples. Neither of whom are from Denver. Impressive..

I'm guessing you're no logician. I doubt you possess even an iota of Cartesian common sense.

Actually, that's the Denver mayor. Have a good night!

Annnnyywayyy....socio-economic discussions aside I have some pertinent info to pass along.

Anyone who may have signed up at the Denver Movement and then went and used said membership at the Boulder gym should check their bank accounts. Me and my gf got antsy/too hung over to go do anything outside the weekend before last and decided to just head up to the Boulder gym. We figured that would kick off our membership and we would be charged, so no problem there really.

But today we got charged again, this time with a pro-rated amount for the month of December. I spoke to Movement tonight but there was no one there at this time who could do anything about it. They are supposed to call me back in the morning to straighten it out. But I just wanted to give a public service announcement for anyone else who may have done the same thing we did.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
