Prescott Area climbing

I'll be heading down to Prescott in March for a two week(ish) trip, and I would like to go climbing for the first half. I'm looking for recommendations for areas and routes (preferably trad), looking for routes up to about 5.10ish, not sure how the grades are in AZ compared to NH. If someone is willing to show me around, I would greatly appreciate it. I am willing to travel away from Prescott a bit.

Unfortunately much of Granite Mountain will be closed for Peregrine Nesting during that time. There is lots of truly world class climbing around Prescott, with Granite Mountain being the real trad gem.

You will find grades at Granite Mountain to be comparable to trad grades in the Whites.

Enjoy your trip. Prescott is an incredible place with a great community.

You will have no problem getting climbing beta from the PC community once you get to town. Get stoked and enjoy your trip!

There are many other places than granite mountain. Sullivan's canyon, theme butte, granite basin, the dells as we call it and promised land have a very big array of problems and will keep you busy.

Does not Thumb Butte ("theme butte") close in parallel with Granite Mountain?

Here is last years link:

I could not find the newest.

There are, however, many other places to climb.

Best Wishes.

Scott,

You are right, Thumb Butte closes as well durning the same period of time for the falcons.

To the OP, as mentioned above there are a lot of small random crags around Prescott that aren't in any guidebook or online. Just take a walk anywhere in the Granite Dells and you'll find a line of bolts, and then some more. Bouldering is plentiful with routes in Groom Creek, base of Thumb Butte, and Granite Basin. Also, around an hour and a half drive you can reach virtually every area from East Phoenix (McDowell's, etc.) to North Sedona or North Flagstaff (Overlook, Paradise Forks, Hobo Jungle, etc.). Tons of different possibilities for whatever you want to hop on.

Cheers,
Mac

Head north to sedona. Weather should be great in March, and there are many nice 5.10 and under multipitch routes

Thanks for the input. Getting really stoked on this trip. Sedona has my attention for sure.

How is getting around Sedona once there? I looked into renting a car but I cannot afford it. I was planning on taking the shuttle from Phoenix to Sedona.

Once you are in Sedona it can be difficult getting where you want to be without a car or bike. Since you have The Village, Uptown, Oak Creek, and then Sedona proper separated it depends on where you are staying/want to go. If you can afford a cheap road bike rental through Absolute Bikes or Sedona Bike and Bean that may be ideal and in your price range. (Presuming you have good cardio from already being a climber! Ha.)

Just an idea to throw out there.

Cheers,
Mac

Climb Earth Angel if you can find it. :-)

Oak Creek Spire is closer to town and also a bit of an adventure.

The bike route is only a bit more affordable, but could be a more fun option.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
