right on glad to see at least one person covering it in the media... this is so sad and such a shame. Too bad the dems don't have a backbone when it counts. Shame on Obama for pushing dems to accept this too.

It's a done deal, now, thanks to John McCain. But here in America money always wins, not the people or anything else. Thanks alot, John. As if he needed more $$$. And a giveaway to Rio Tinto, of all rapacious mining outlaws... a company whose executives should be in jail, not in charge.
Extremely disappointing but totally expected. It's Congress, after all.

why just blame McCain? did you see how much money Harry Reid got from this?

The Huffington post comment section is classic, blame the Republicans as if the Dems walk on water. This is whats wrong with our country, partisan ignorance.

Plenty of blame to go around but McCain was the architect behind closed doors.

.."The measure was added into the NDAA largely thanks to the efforts of Sen. John McCain, who, along with fellow Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, sees the project as an economic boon...

..Flake acknowledged that the deal never would have passed on its own, even as he lamented the process that got it through the Senate...

..In this case, the addition of the Arizona swap and the other land measures were never discussed in public, and were added during secret negotiations between the House and Senate Armed Services Committee. the deal was never publicly revealed until the House started work on passing the entire defense bill last week.

It will become law as soon as President Barack Obama signs it. Rio Tinto, though subsidiary Resolution Copper, will take possession of the land a year later. Although the land will then be private property and federal environmental reviews will no longer be enforceable..." HuffPost 12-12

Congress can being sued -I hope the sovereign tribes review that option.

we've got nothing to loose- here is a new petition to sign & share

Letter to the President: Veto the provision of the Carl Levin and Howard P. ‘Buck’ McKeon NDAA that would allow mining in the Tonto National Forest through a land swap.

Stop Apache Land Grab petition is currently at 87,518

As much as it pains me to admit it, I have to agree it's hard to pin this on just Republicans.

Both Lee and Coburn, who tried to excise the Lands part, are Republican.

Levin, a Democrat and chairman of Senate Armed Services, had to have some part in allowing the sneaky backroom addition of the Lands part at the last minute.

Look comparing what Reid did to what McCain did is rediculous. Reid got money for a new national park for future generations to see preserved fossils , and McCain sold out a beautiful and sacred area for a private corporation to profit from. But even with the loss of Queen Creek and the lands in Alaska the Lands portion of the bill was by far a net positive emviormentaly and is why the democrats and many environmental groups supported it as a whole . The democrats had one last chance to set a side land for a couple new national parks and hundreds of thousands of acres for conservation before the rupublicans take over congress. Let's face it the mine was going to happen regardless of party politics, that much money in copper is just not going to be left under ground untouched . It's just the world we live in. Let's just be glad that unlike most of the mining done in the world at least there will be some environmental regulation in the process , all be it small.
you guys put up a good fight considering the odds, thank you.

so if they found a huge lode under Arlington would it still be OK?

check from Resolution should be coming soon

what regulations will there be -if any- RU you an expert? If this exchange occurs Queen Creek climbing will be in private hands and as many here know that doesn't mean sheets for the environment. It will all just fall into a huge pit sinkhole anyway so who cares right?

"Let's face it, let's just be glad.." oh i'm happy as a clam, while you bending over can I have your wallet we're a little short on cash this week thanks!
