More plastic, less quality control?

My guess is that the re-design was a chance to simplify the design, materials, and assembly. The originals were well known to have a high parts count and require a lot of fiddly hand assembly steps. I think it might have been Mal Daly, or similar that commented on this after CCH was shopping for a buyer several years back ad Trango chose not to pursue it.

Fixe was smart to stick with the original design long enough to become the trusted standard bearer for the design before overhauling them, but the original design had been met or surpassed by Totem, BD, and Metolius.

Hopefully the new design will be as good or better. I personally have moved on and am really happy with the BD X4's on my aid rack. Almost all my standard aliens are now retired or in the overflow aid rack just-in-case. The 0.1 and 0.2 X4's were more confidence inspiring and easier to place in tight spots than the blue and black aliens. Larger than that felt pretty comparable once I got used to the sizing.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
