Bone Mountain Ice

Just drove through the Bolton area on 89 and couldn't help but noticing the massive ice flow forming on the middle section of Bone. Looks like it would make for a killer mixed line right now, and with that much ice this early on its certain to touch down later in the season. I know when I was up there recently I was eyeing the drippage on that massive slab section, so it seems to me that there's quite a bit of ice up there. Has anyone made the trek? Curious to see if anyone has any info.

My buddy Jeff went up a number of years ago, granted before we figured out how to get in from Bolton and he skinned up from the bottom of the valley which I guess was epic. For reasons I can't remember (I think maybe the guy he was with gave up before they got to it) didn't get on it, but said it will probably go at about a 3, and probably a nice 3, but I'm having a hard time working myself up for the effort. grade snob I guess.

Been wanting to climb that thing for years. I've made the trek up to Bone a couple times, once in the summer via the logging roads that pass 82 crag, and once on an epic skin from Bolton Notch rd (I think we started at or near the resort but I can't remember)...it's not an easy place to get to but its pretty sweet up there. I'd be down to go next time I'm up, that should be in a few weeks.

Also if you look at East Bolton later in the season the most insane looking pillar forms a line that looks super hard, and scary.

I've been up there. If you're referring to the huge central slab that looks so enticing from the interstate, you could probably ski it in a good snow year. It's much lower angle than it appears from the road. If you're referring to something else, I'm intrigued. I didn't get a look up there in this last cold snap. Certainly there is other potential, though nothing I recall seeing that I would expect to be visible from the road...

Last time I was up I noticed that the massive slab in the middle section had a considerable amount of water on it. It looked like it would make for a 300+ moderate ice climb, however, I don't think this section is visible from the road, but I could be mistaken. What I saw from the road appeared vertical, but it was hard to tell from so far away. I guess the only way to really find out would be to set up a telescope from somewhere or walk up there before there's too much snow.. and I'm not particularly inclined to do either. Who's got a snow machine we can borrow?

If you do get a snow machine you can start up Pinneo Brook Rd and pretty much continuously follow logging roads all the way up.....I used to hike up that way for some bouldering. May want to clear it with the guy who lives there, used to see him taking target practice pretty often haha

Dylan Oliver is really psyched on checking out ice at bone this winter, I would try to contact him he's been eyeing that slab for ice for a while now. We talked to a guide, I forget his name, at Cathedral this fall and he said there's a few established ice routes out there, some of which are multipitches. He didn't remember too much about them though.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
