the new Cassin x-light ice tool, direct competitor of Petzl Quark - has anyone tested them?

The X-All Mountain competes with the Quark.

I don't agree. They are not in the same weight class, they don't have the same shaft angles and they don't serve the same purposes. But anyway...

x-light, anyone?

I got to play with a prototype set a few months back....but not much mileage on them. They seemed great--lightweight, nice swing to them, versatile...these will replace the "Alpax" tool in the Cassin line, I think. No pics, no specific info, but I recall liking them and demanding some from the boys at Cassin. To date, the tools have not been FedEx'd to my house. Bastards.

Keep yer ices out for them, though. They seem sweet. I trust CAMP/Cassin will be at the ice fests with demo tools. I love my All-Mountains, getting a set of Dreams...and yeah, well, I'll probably end up with some X-Lights, too.

Good luck!

I thought it was more a competitor to the Petzl Sum'Tec myself. Big fan of Petzl and CAMP ice tools so I was looking at these myself. I got my hands on the X-Light a in Sept. and it was pretty nice, very slick looking in person. Felt good for about as much as you can test without being on a mountain.

X-Light or the Grivel Light Machine. Both look to plunge well and climb well. Sum'Tec is pretty solid as well. That said, I will probably end up with the X-Light consider I already have the Dreams and X-All, amongst other tools.

You don't have to agree. The X-Light is positioned against the Sum-Tec. I haven't used the X-Light but they will likely perform similar to a Venom, Sum-tec, Light Machine, etc.

Thanks for what feedback you could give.

I have a pair being sent to me in a couple of week's time - I'll post some initial thoughts once i've played with them a bit.

In the meantime don't forget that you can swap in a grip rest (x-ice or x-dry) that is more suitable for vertical or near-vertical terrain. Stoked to try them.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
