I am based in Ankara, Turkey for the next few years and looking for climbing, hiking and esp ice climbing recommendations. I am already working on planning a Mount Ararat trek in spring 2016 but am looking to keep busy (and in shape) in the mean time. I am hoping to head to Rize....suggestions anyone?

I assume you've already heard of Geyikbayiri, but if not, it's really great climbing in beautiful surroundings with nice people from all over the world. Pretty ideal!

I had not, so will look it up for sure. Thanks. Are you based here per chance?

I'd highly recommend getting to Aladaglar National Park. Near Camardi (SE of Nigde), I think about a day's travel from Ankara (maybe less, I can't remember). A few km outside the park there is a climber campground hosted by two climbers with sites & a couple cabins, they rent basic gear only (rope/draws). There's a sport climbing canyon just outside the park entrance (maybe 40 min walk from the camping). I only spent a day climbing there. Inside the park there's supposedly a lot of multipitch alpine sport & trad. Skiing/alpine climbing in winter/spring. Beautiful place that reminded me a bit of the eastern Sierra, I'd love to go back with all my gear and more time, hopefully you get the chance to check it out and report back. Recent comment on the main Turkey page adds additional info.

Nope, I live in New Paltz, which would make for quite a hike to Ankara! Have fun!

Hi,

I stayed for about a week around Aladaglar mountains this summer after a conference in Istanbul. We stayed at this place aladaglarcamping.com/. The area is very nice and wild. You have great sport climbing canyon on conglomerate about 30 min from the camp site.

The guys who own the camping-bungalow place are mountain guides and they have been developing the area for a while now. They have a pretty good guide they sell and they can give you lots of tips. We didn't had our rack put still manage to do some "alpine-sport" climb as some route are entirely bolted. If you have gear, there is lot of potential and not much people!

And if you have some extra time, Kalymnos is not too far!

Hi,

If you plan your trekking on Ararat in 2016 you have a lot of time to keep busy & in shape :)
If you are skiing enthusiast I highly recommend you Palandoken ski resort, near to Erzurum. Really great place!
Few people wrote about Aladaglar National Park. I agree that is beautiful place, but I love also Kackar range. It's perfect place for trekking & skiing.
Before Ararat, if you want to be well acclimatized, you can climb Mount Nemrut, Mount Suphan or Little Ararat. Some tours you can see on this website: ararattrip.com/

Good luck!

Check out olymposrockclimbing.com. They have some nice sport routes.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
