Planning a trip to SE Asia next winter over New Years. I am told it will be busy, and that room rates, food, etc is expensive.
Our first choice is Thailand. Seems like more and varied climbing, and ease of travel is of interest. But, we've been told Vietnam can be 1/3 the cost, and less busy. Will be there for 3 weeks. Half climbing, half sightseeing and beach sitting. Budget is limited.
I was in Thailand over Xmas/NYE two years ago, and everything you've heard in terms of crowds, prices, etc is true. I found this to be especially true at Tonsai, and I couldn't wait to leave. The climbing is good, but waiting three deep to climb a polished route was not awesome. Chiang Mai and Crazy Horse Buttress, on the other hand, was much better. The tourist crowds were definitely there, but far less climbers. Honestly, the whole time we were wishing we would have checked out Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos. Thailand just seemed overrun at that time of year. Don't get me wrong, it was amazing, it just felt a little watered down.
I live in nakhon si thammarat (southern Thailand). I'm close to krabi and some other lesser known climbing areas. I live in a large house with room to crash! Feel free to message me on Facebook for more information . I teach during the week but have off about 15 days over Christmas/new years.
