...but she's using Organic soy-based Acrylic paint?!?!

It's now getting play on the national news although her name wasn't mentioned. She's got to be freaking out!! If she was smart she'd turn herself in and get the mess over with. It's gaining mass traction in the intardnet

Heartbreaking. All I can really think about is whether the core issue is "entitlement" (I have a right to do this) or "disrespect" (who cares about nature, it's ugly anyway). Or, possibly, ego-centrism ("the world revolves around me").

As for the other debate here... You'd think I'd know not to touch this stuff.

dr_feelgood wrote:First, you say she should be tortured
"She" is a pronoun. The genderless alternatives are:

- "it", e.g. The fact that it documented all of this on Instagram (technically correct but considered insulting)

- "they", e.g. may lead to them being prosecuted (technically correct but confusing, because colloquially "they" is plural)

Why are people under the assumption that everyone likes Banksy? This delusional girl as well.

I don't care for Banksy at all. I don't care if his tagging is some satire on current events or has some political agenda. He is in my mind a vandal, and always will be.

If he tagged my place I would sell it to some sucker who thinks it is art and then move to somewhere else.

This girls work is trash, even if it was well executed from a technical standpoint (which it is not) it has no place in a national park. I hope she is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

I won't say that I "approve" of Banksky, but at least his (its?) work is artistic and thoughtful. That's at least a step better than mindless destruction, e.g. "L337Z0R WUZ HEAR".

I'm still with you 100% though, graffiti has no place in the national parks.

If I was to call her a dickless, no talent loser, would that be sexist/misogynistic? Or just a harsh statement of truth?

This post violated Rule #1. It has been removed by Mountain Project.

So the post that states (basically, can't recall how it was worded exactly) that who cares about her artwork, too busy looking at her nice legs, is deleted. Rightfully so, I think it was pretty crass.

...and the post above that praises her "work", while obviously cropping out her "artwork" such as it is but framing her body; which was implying and prompting the following post; that can stay.

Swing and a miss, MP.

Yea, as I'd just laugh.
But when someone says that there is "too much testosterone in this room."
Well, that's a serious and intentional sexist insult directly generalizing and insulting that generalization on men.

Is it misogynous when a woman calls another woman a bitch?
Is it sexist if a guy will call a guy out on it but not a woman?
Just curious...

Lots of rules to follow here, and since there are so many that conflict, it can take a while for the non-indoctrinated to "get it." And besides, many of them changed since the last time I was at a small liberal arts college.

Now, did I like the post that called the perp a bitch? No, of course not. What kind of dick would call a woman a bitch?

OOOOOOOPPPPS. Did I just do that? (Man hater).

Sexism against men doesn't exist (just as reverse racism doesn't exist.) Sexism isn't just prejudice based on gender... it's prejudice based on gender, combined with power. Sexism is systemic, institutional, and far reaching. It's prejudice being directed toward an oppressed or marginalized group (in this case, women.) You can't have sexism against men, because men hold (the majority,) of power in our society, and their gender isn't used to discredit or oppress them (generally.)

It very damn well can be, especially if it's coming from a place of internalized sexism.

Is ‘Bitch’ an Example of Internalized Sexism?

If you get to define both power and sexism, then maybe that is true. But luckily, you don't. Language was not meant to be bent to fit a political purpose - it was meant to relate the human experience.
Sexism is defined as prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender.
I submit that it is entirely possible to dislike or disrespect men (or a race) based on their gender, and to act on that dislike or disrespect, and it happens every day.
Furthermore, women have power. To say otherwise is delusional.

You should re-read your first premise then. Because if a woman is doing it, is there power? Your statements are in conflict with each other.

Definition of sexism:
1. prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women
2. behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex

from merriam-webster.com

While I agree most of the cases of sexism we talk about are sexism against women and that this is where many of the social and economic disparities lie in society, that doesnt mean that gender stereotypes and perceived "right" social roles aren't imposed on men, so men certainly can be the victim of sexism.

I can guarantee that she not only majored in something worthless like 18th century french literature, but that she also voted for Obama in both 2008 and 2012.

She probably wasn't old enough to vote in 2008.

A certain number of narcissistic dumb-dumbs doesn't negate the worth of studying culture. It takes many types and ways of looking at things to make a healthy, vibrant society, something many social conservatives don't seem to understand. The whole cult of ignorance is pretty weird to me. It is like a twisted version of the romantic ideal of simplicity.

Matt Wilson · · Vermont, USA · Joined May 2010 · Points: 316

I'm not against people studying the arts and culture, I just know too many people from high school who took out dozens of thousands of dollars in students loans to get degrees in such majors, and are now living under crushing debt because they work a minimum wage job.

If you can afford to get that kind of degree, go nuts. But to put yourself in debt for it is a huge mistake.

M Sprague · · New England · Joined Nov 2006 · Points: 5,090

I do agree with that. That is just a really bad practical economic sense. Most people should study a lot of those subjects on their own in conjunction with their formal studies in more practical subjects.

Go on believing what your college professors have taught you, but don't be surprised when it clashes with reality. You might brace yourself, because it is going to hurt...

to bastardize an MLK quote : If racism is judging someone on "the color of their skin rather than the content of their character",

then what does it matter the skin color of the person doing the judging or the skin color of the victim? and where does power come into that? I suggest that you have been brainwashed into ignoring reality. There are racist white people and there racist black and people of every other color. And there are plenty of people who aren't. That is just life, and you are probably not going to do much to change that. Same with sexism...

Contrary to what your professors have told you, life is not, cannot, and never will be fair. There will always be have and have nots, there will always be crime and poverty and someone will always claim to be oppressed by some other group (sometimes rightly, although mostly by their own poor choices). The sooner you stop beating your head against that wall, the better off you will be. You should focus all that energy on yourself and being the best person that you can be. You'll get much further along and be much happier with yourself.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
