In search of "home"...Help us re-locate!

Hello, wonderful Mt. Project community (yes, I think you're wonderful...all of you). No, this post is not another "help a couple bums out" thread. Rather, we (my wife and I) are looking to you to help us choose the next place for us to settle.

Backstory:
We're a young, married couple from California, who seem to have issues settling in one location for more than a year or so. In the past few years alone, we've wandered the US and Canada, lived in Vietnam for a year, and are now in Italy (until next July) while she completes grad school. I'm a web application developer and run my own thing. She's a Montessori teacher.

What's next?
We've been actively searching for "home" for the past few years; some place that we can arrive in and say..."This is the place we should be." Her career requires that she needs to stay in one location, for at least a few years. Mine is flexible enough that I can go anywhere, as long as there's internet.

We are both extremely passionate about the mountains. We also lived in San Luis Obispo for a few years, and fell in love with the coast (who wouldn't?). We love to climb, backpack, ski, and surf...among other outdoor pursuits. After years of moving around, we're about ready to find "home."

Desires:

  • Somewhere with a Montessori school (or a community that has the demographic to support one)
  • Somewhere close to backpack-able mountains (skiing is a plus)
  • Climbing nearby
  • Somewhere with reliable internet
  • A source of water nearby (within a 15 minute drive)...whether it be a lake, river, ocean, etc.
  • Less than 150,000 people living there

We're just looking to get all of the suggestions we can. We're not set on any specific country, state, or city. We've considered locations from Thailand to New Zealand, and Colorado to British Columbia. What say you, Mt. Project-ers? Any advice for a couple oh-so-picky outdoor snobs?

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like Squamish might hit all your requirements.

I think Mountain Trails is looking for a Montessori teacher. Good luck!

Hi Ryan,

you seem like a cool dude, and I remember being in your shoes a few years back. Although I think you have an upper hand with a little more flexibility maybe with your job and all. But I was pondering your question, and I think the suggestions for a "home" town here on earth are great so far. However, any place we decide to put up "tent" here on earth is temporary. So I just wanted to mention this website below which has a much greater "home" and it's forever! I am certainly enjoying my 'home' down here for now, but look even greater forward to my home after I die.
Alright, that's it for now, rock on, bro, from a fellow climber,
Nate.

I can't wait to see your response to a belay anchor inquiry.

Come check out NH. Climbing, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, lakes, rivers, etc. and there are Montessori schools around here.

Bend, Oregon.... especially if you are even considering having a family of your own.

Perfect climate. We are in the rain shadow yet can drive to a rain forest in 30 minutes. We get a whopping 13-15" of rain a year. But literally 30 minutes away is the cascade crest that gets 600" of snow per year.

Climbing year round. Skiing (30 minutes away) 6 months a year. Endless mountain biking from your door. Really low cost of living when compared to areas with similar benefits. River in town. Lots of lakes.

Absolutely wonderful town and community, especially for those with or thinking about having kids.

And you get to share this all with only 100,000 of your closest friends rather than 2,000,000 like the front range.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies so far. Definitely some locations we weren't familiar with. The list keeps growing.

We'll take all the suggestions we can get! Keep 'em coming.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
