Preordered, I'm stoked. I still haven't climbed ropes there enough.

Thanks for putting these books together. Is Cashiers next on your list?

Cashiers; now that would be one hell of a project. That place takes extreme time and extreme talent and I seem to be lacking at least one of those most of the time!

Shannon has been compiling a guide for the Cashiers area for some time. Talked to him the other day and he said he was about to hire a plane for aerial shots. His problem is that he puts them up faster than he can compile them! Is a guidebook a vanity project if, like, 50% of the routes were put up by the author? Even then a lot of the cliffs won't be included for access reasons. Reminds me of a time right after one of Kelley's guides came out, I think ed. 3(?), and when I stopped at the 64 overlook next to Whitesides I ran into a couple of kids with their new guide eagerly trying to piece together what was what. I told them, 'Every cliff you see has routes on it; none of them are in that book,' and one of them wailed, 'Well what good is it?' Indeed.

Great that Shannon is going on a Cashier's book; he would be the man to do it. I would not call it vanity at all; just taking time to share some good info that others can use. Just like posting a route on mountain project, most people's intent is to share what they love rather than simply pad personal ego...hopefully that's their intent!

Got a chance to use my new guidebook today and it is excellent. Took a friend up to RB for his first time. Climbed a few moderate classics (Fruit Loops, Granola, and Comatose). In between those we climbed a few harder lines (Born Again, Pull the Plug, and Rusty Redneck). I found it interesting that each of these three routes has been downgraded in the new book compared to Selected Climbs. Born Again 11a to 10d, Pull the Plug 11a/b to 11a, and Rusty Redneck from 10c to 10b. Has anyone used the new book enough to notice if this is a consistent theme? Again, the book is excellent so this is not meant to be a negative, but just curious if anyone else has noticed this as a trend or did I just hit the downgrade lottery today?

Nice work with the book. I am evidence that it is legible to first timers at the Bald. Very informative and sometimes really humorous. Fun to read and even more to put to use!

Thanks for the kind words Chris and Kevin. To answer your question Chris, I was on the FA of the three routes you mentioned and I think the grades given in the new book are closer to reality than those in the prior book. More folks have done the lines since the Select guide and a consensus seems to have been reached. Plus grades are just approximations anyway, always changing from guide to guide and from person to person.
