And they are talking more than a 100 missing?? The size of this disaster is unfathomable.

Wow, that's crazy. The story gives pretty poor coverage, and is even inaccurate in places. It mentions that 244 people crossed the pass over a couple of days (a crazy amount of people BTW) and stopped in Muktinath. They then say they are unsure of how many crossed the pass from Phedi. However, when you cross the pass to Muktinath, you start in Phedi, which is the last inn, at 14,500', before heading over the Thorang La.

I can easily see how a heavy snow storm would be dangerous, particularly given how little mountain experience (and equipment) your average trekker has. Sending all my positive thoughts for a better outcome. Very sad.

I was in Phu last year right before some large slides cut off the town. There were a lot of people unaccounted for...more than 100..but in the end it was mostly a matter of the slide cutting off passage and communication. Once the trails/roads opened back up, most of those turned out ok, just had been trapped someplace without communication. Hopeful that is the case here.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
