I have been climbing for a couple years now and am very interested in mountaineering/ice climbing. Unlike rock gyms though there really arent ice gyms that I can practice or try it out. My question is would anyone be willing to take me on an ice climbing trip, if so i would be willing to pay for time/gas/borrowing gear or whatever it would take. I am a 21/m attending UVU living in Orem.

Find a group going to Ouray and join them. It is an ice gym:
mountainproject.com/v/uncom…

Likely you will need a good pair of mountaineering/ice climbing boots and crampons.
Or you can rent:
campusrec.utah.edu/programs…
They also have rentals in Ouray.

Or just find a partner and figure out a trip yourself. The majority of the park is setup for top roping off chains and/or trees.

There was an ice climbing festival in Provo Canyon last year. If they do it again this year, that's one of the best ways to get introduced to the basics.

Yep, the easiest way to phase into ice climbing is;
Step 1) buy or rent some mountaineering boots.
Step 2) go to an ice climbing festival and take (Pay for) a workshop.
Step 3) while at the Festival, smile, shake hands, belay, chat, and make a friend.
Step 4) set up a date to go climbing with that friend.

I live up in Idaho, and I've taught 3 people how to ice climb. A few are better ice climbers than me now.
I usually climb the GWI in LCC several times a year. Its a great place to learn.
Send me a PM with your contact info.

You can ask Darren Knezek or Matt Park at Mountainworks and they'll help you get started with gear and finding partners. I think they probably even have gear to rent or borrow there.

Mountainworks has always been the place for local gear/beta/partners. Sorta the hub for Happy Valley climbing in all disciplines.

We do rent the boots, crampons, and ice tools. You're more than welcome to climb with us when we go.
Now we just need some ice! :)

Look for people with 'Team Easy' gear (patches and stickers) at the gym's (mostly Momentum). Among other things, we are all ice climbers. We'll do multiple trips to Ouray and Hyalite over the season (2 trips are already booked for the upcoming season). Each trip usually has a good group of people with a variety of skill sets - all including beginners : experts or Rock Climbing Vets : have only 'repelled'.

We are always looking to add more people to the group, PM me and we can talk.

Agree with Darren, we just need some ice - bring on the wet and cold.

P.S. Before I get trolled, using 'Repel' was an intentional typo pointing out the level of noob that we have taught to climb safely.

My question is,is the ice climbing in maple easy to set up up top ropes or is every thing needs to be led first?
thank you,
I have extra pair of boots, and crampons if we can set up top ropes we can have fun.

Maple would be the last place that I would go to toprope. You have to lead everything that I have seen there. Provo Canyon, Joes Valley and a few other places have great top rope potential.

Thank you very much for the information Dallen. I do love to lead but, if I can't find a partner I have to rope solo.

Before you do anything, you'll need to find some ice.
GOOD LUCK!!!! How much for a ticket to Alaska?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
