Hoping to climb at Cathedral/Whitehorse at the weekend. What's the situation with discreet wild camping, are people ever confronted about it or can you get away with it and is it legal?

Failing that are there any cheap campsites, hostels or bunkhouses nearby?

There's a campground on the kanc, maybe 20 max from n. Conway, not sure how much it is tho. Or you can camp on any of the WMNF land, which is pleantiful in that area.

So camping in National Forest land is legal? We can just pick an area and camp (or just unlikely to get caught)? Or we have to camp at a specific campground.

You're usually allowed to dispersed camp anywhere on NF land as long as you are 100ft from water sources, and a reasonable distance (300ft?) from trails. You aren't supposed to camp near established campgrounds.

You could call (603) 447-5448 and ask the rangers in Conway for some tips on dispersed camping in the area.

There is a hostel in Conway Village as well.

I'm pretty sure that dispersed camping is still OK along Hurricane Mountain rd...east of town, but close. Avoid the close by cathedral area. There also is camping along Dugway rd which is the back way to Sundown area.

The hostel is pretty nice. Clean with lots of kitchen space and it can be a cool place to meet other climbers. Think it runs $20-$25/night and is 10 miles or so south of North Conway.
