I'm not trying to knock on your objective or project. But 8 hours for $17 is pretty lackluster at $2.13 an hour, especially considering most people will spend a couple hours at the gym. When I was working at a LAN center, the patrons were more willing to work for a week pass versus a day pass. In both your gym and the LAN center there weren't any net losses gained by giving away a larger incentive, all of the things that make your gym Movement, will already be operational. And the larger incentive usually made them come back after their time period expired.

That being said, I commend your commitment to the environment. Your actions make me aspire to be less beholden to the value of time in a monetary capacity.

Really Eliot? That's your response? Sigh.

The idea is to more or less volunteer your time to do trail work to help fix up a resource that folks like you undoubtably use. The Movement pass is just a 'hey thanks' perk that is being thrown in as a bonus. Apparently you need to work harder on that part of yourself that "aspires" to do stuff that doesn't provide you with immediate monetary reward. Perhaps you should recalibrate what your definition of reward means so that you can move beyond participating in self-serving-only endeavors.

Self serving, I agree. But, I'm trying to make ends meet more than thinking trail building is beneath my time. Perhaps I phrased it wrong, I tend to do that a lot. Most of the people I know my age say the same thing when topics like this are discussed. My idea was to perhaps promote an idea of getting additional help by offering an almost at no cost incentive to people who are available. I will undoubtedly be working those days and the increase in a "reward" wouldn't change my attendance. I also know that trail building is hard work, and more people can make it a lot easier.

So I'll go ahead and rephrase what I originally said:
Man, too bad I have to work. Thanks for helping protect our environment. You might be able to get more volunteers if you offered a larger incentive, as this will cost you almost nothing. Plus they'll probably come back.

I hope you realize that you sound like a douche. Volunteerism has no monetary value. The trail work these guys have done at the Creek is amazing. The work hours are usually not that long, and if you have a large crew of people, it's way less than 8 hours per person and you get to hang out with great people in the most beautiful setting.

the problem begins with the title of the thread. change it and people will enter with a different attitude.

This. The day pass seemed more of a form of payment than good folks being nice to other good folks.

This is hardly the first or last time it will happen, and its not on purpose.

At the risk of sounding like a bigger douche, and to expand on what I said before:
If the idea of of this project is promote community awareness and involvement in maintaining the climbing areas we use, then capturing the attention of more of the community would spread the word more quickly. The project was posted on MP for that reason, I assume. It has also been pointed out in other threads that the climbing generation that is just emerging has more of a focus on crushing routes than most other aspects of climbing. What better way to foster a younger generation about the ethics of the environment than to make them an offer they can't refuse and welcome them into the fold? Bigger community. More awareness. Larger work crew. Movement would look more awesome than they already do.

I don't see the downside to my proposal, but I would love to hear more about how this style of thinking is douchetastic.

Just an FYI...I first posted a similar thread in the Southern Utah forum with a different title, but when I copied that post in this thread I was flagged from MP.com for posting the same thing, so I quickly changed the title of the thread. Sorry to cause this weird little stir, but the idea was to have a perk for doing some trail work. That's all. Hope to see some of you out there!

In the past, Donini usually has given free crack climbing clinics on Sunday after the cleanup. That's gotta be more valuable than a week-long gym pass.

Who said Donini wasn't going to be there??? Not me...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
