Weather at the Red over thanksgiving?

Hi all,

I was thinking of making a trip to the red river gorge over Thanksgiving, but I'm worried about the weather. Specifically, will it be too cold to climb during that time of year? I've been to the Red many times before, but mostly in the spring or fall.

Thanks!

Patrick! The Red is ideal over Thanksgiving! I live in Indianapolis and the Red is my home crag and I would say it is worth it! Where are you coming from? There is always a chance or rain or snow since that is pretty deep into the fall season but it is usually, almost 90%, fine! If that helps. It gets coooold at night and it is cold in the morning. Sunrise and sunset is definitely a factor but with a proper headlamp and outer wear you should be more than fine friend.

Thanks Thomas, I'm coming from Chicago and a good friend would be flying in from Maryland, so we're looking to decide fairly soon on whether he should book flights. I only ask because I remember one particular day in late March/early April that I was there, the rock was so cold that my hands tended to go numb halfway up routes.

I was there over last Thanksgiving. It's definitely cold in the morning and evening, so you'll need appropriate layers at those times. But if you stick to the sunny walls during the day it's quite nice. Definitely worth it if the weather is clear and sunny. Not so much if it's cloudy.

I agree. Can be hit or miss and be ready to get a late start some mornings.
Hope you get sunny days.

Agree with the above stuff. We all know in this sport the weather can change at any one moment but if you stick to the sunny walls and prep well for the nights and mornings with the exceptional temp drops and inclines you should be good. I would continue to check the weather but over the years i have noticed that if the weather app or whatever you are looking at says three days clear then it will be that way. If it says two days of rain in a row than almost 100% you will see two days of rain. The rock definitely can get cold that time of year too. Thats the end of the winter time in the midwest sometimes but the fall sun really seems to warm up the rock well if there are no clouds! PM me if you want/would like any more beta on the area. Have an enjoyable safe trip!
