Mixed Climbing Bocan Noob Question

Hey,

This is a question from a complete noob, sorry

Can I take my shiny new nomics out in Boulder Canyon, set a TR, and try mixed climbing? I have no idea it's okay, I was thinking it would scratch the rock so you can't?

Does anyone know any good places to try mixed climbing around boulder? (toprope)

Thank you!
Adam

There are a few established mixed lines at the Moffet tunnel ice that you can lead or tr...not much further than bc.

+1

While I think you could very easily find a pile of choss in the Canyon to scratch up with your new picks, you aren't going to find much of anything worthwhile that hasn't already been established as a sport route. Sure there are a lot of out of the way, rarely climbed routes in BOCan that your could scratch your way up without anyone noticing for a while, but at the end of the day. You'd have to live with that within your own conscience. And I don't think you want to be "that guy".

Whereas at Moffat Tunnel (and Hidden Falls too!!! Though it's slightly further away) you can find some pretty good routes established for the express purpose of mixed climbing.

Most if not all of the mixed routes are on the route index here and here. Though please feel free to send me a PM if you'd like further beta (or hell. Even a partner. It's about time to start training my tool-grip strength anyway).

This area was developed for dry tooling a long time ago:

those routes on rock island actually look pretty fun, so can I ethically TR those with my tools?

Yeah, its been a dry tooling area long before anyone bothered rock climbing there. Total choss pile = perfect for dry tooling!

Yep I was tooling Sunday morning on the island. My technique still needs lots of work.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
