Red Rocks comment pages cluttered

I deleted the original message as it was nonconstructive. Here is a simple revision which gets the point across:

The Red Rocks comment pages are riddled with useless and misplaced comments which don't help the route pages. Many of those comments belong in a forum as the area/route comment pages are for pertinent information. As an avid MP user who finds it a very helpful resource I'd like to see this change

Sincerely,
a calm and relaxed climber.

Agreed, useful info only. This also counts for photos. Nobody cares to see the awful pics you take of your buddies ass. Route topos, terrain photos, what to look for for the descent, etc, etc. Hell I'll even enjoy the pretty artsy pictures but if you don't want to frame it, keep it for yourself.

1. Use the "Improve This Page" to suggest changes. Improve the description with text you find in the good comments. Suggest comments to delete.

2. If you don't like a photo, give it a low star rating, and it will move to the bottom of the heap, and one day might even disappear. Do the opposite for the good ones. We don't automatically know what's good or bad, but with enough votes, we can do stuff about it!

Thanks, Nick. Really appreciate those useful tips.

Right on Nick. I was unaware of the improvement page. I'll use it.

Sorry about the dick head nature of this post. I wrote it in a state of irritation amplified by irritations I have with overcrowded climbing areas and poor behavior at those places. I could have gotten the point across in a much simpler less abrasive fashion. I'm also, sometimes a dick head. None the less, it would be rad to clean the pages up for the benefit of all.

Don't worry, it's just that those years of being a ranger at Whitney have made you old and bitter. Most guys have to wait until they're in their 80's, sitting on a rocker on the porch, to be that curmudgeonly. Embrace it!

Yo Todd! I am becoming a haggard old bastard at the ripe old age of 30. I guess that's what happens when you start working, schooling, and just not living in a van driving around carefree. Instead of drinking beers by fires most nights I'll just bitch at the internet. Wonderful.

Maybe we can start a support group for climbers who have had to move out of their van and do real life things. I have to admit it was way wiser to keep the stoked level up when every day was a climbing day!!! Off to work now(BUMMER)....

Nick: any thoughts about allowing users to rate comments on the route pages? And eventually hiding comments with low ratings? I think this would help a lot with the clutter factor that Wylie mentioned in his original post.

If we had star ratings (like photos), eventually we could sort comments by rating. I'm fairly afraid of the unintended consequences that we can't think of... but I like it in general. For example, there are times when comments need to be sequential to make sense.

Some forums allow users to give comments a +1 or -1 and posts below a certain threshold are blocked from view unless the reader specifically clicks to view it. That system seems to work well, comments are kept in chronological order and most of the chaff gets filtered out.

Unfortunately, a comment can be promoted by someone else who really doesn't know themselves whether the comment is any better than any other comment. Or there can be agendas. Perhaps with many voters these things settle out.

Rather, I am on the side of simply being as clear as possible about attribution.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
