Prepared for accidental adventure

Hello all

Its been a while since I posted due to a very busy summer (Looking forward to getting out to the US in 5 weeks for the winter - woo hoo!)

Over the summer Ive seen (as ever unfortunately) a few incident reports, people saying thanks for help after accidents and posts about accidents on climbing forums and it inspired me to write a short little blog about an accident that happened a little while ago when I was Living and working in Bolivia

As it was a day when I was just out there climbing with mates rather than in professional capacity it raised the issue of how prepared your average climber/hill-goer is for when accidents happen.

For example how many know first aid, how to evacuate a casualty (within reason as we often have mountain rescue services available in the UK & US) and how to at the very least self rescue.

No point to make but an interesting topic to think about non-the-less. Be interested to hear how many everyday climbers have put the effort in to learn and be prepared?

Congratulations on the good work in evacuating the injured person.

Thanks R.C

wasnt my first rodeo as it were as I have been in MR and work professionally in the mountains, however it was for those friends I was with and thats what raised the comments that they were glad they had recently done a wilderness medic 1st aid. They did however admit that they had no idea how to do casualty lowers or set suitable belays etc so were glad of my experience on that.

I have many years of recurring First Aid, CPR, and AED training. But have yet to come across a Wilderness First Responder or evacuation course. Any ideas where one might said courses?

Thanks Andrew, UT has one starting the day we are supposed to head out for skiing in CO. It's a dilemma, have fun or get smarter.
