How do I avoid using this website while using my phone? There is no link to view desktop site. I asked Chrome to request desktop site but that didn't work.

It's the same content, just reformatted for the smaller screen - it's not a separate web site so there's no way to switch. Announced here: mountainproject.com/v/mp-ne…

What do you dislike about the mobile layout (or prefer about the desktop layout)? It's brand new, and I'll be changing things as feedback comes in.

On at least this thread, the text goes off the right side of the screen, I'm guessing due to link formatting?:

For one it doesn't seem to adjust between portrait/landscape viewing (on Android) anymore.

You've also made some fonts smaller across the board, for better or worse.

Thanks Greg, that's fixed.

I see that (it does work on iOS, but not Android). This one is more complicated so I'll look later today.

I'd prefer separate mobile and desktop sites (and honestly I pretty much always use the desktop sites when available). I am not a fan of sites that switch to a mobile version based on browser size. I don't like resizing a window a little and suddenly having the entire page change such that whatever I was sizing the window to is now gone. If you want to change based on something, I'd say use screen size and not window size.

The benefit of mobile for me would be to trim data sizes so pages load faster on slower mobile connections and use less of any cap I may have with my carrier. It looks like the same size images are requested for either format, and the combined page size is the same in either view. (maybe I'm wrong on this, I just played a little in my browser on my desktop only)

It really doesn't utilize the screen available. It pushes the text to the middle resulting in compressed paragraphs. Each sentence is about seven words long.

The screen on my S3 Galaxy is large enough to make desktop sites easy to read.

It would be nice to be able to opt out of this new mobile format.

Oddly enough when I hit reply it took me to the normal desktop site reply box. That is good enough for almost 20 word sentences before it starts the next line of text.

Since this is now the thread...
Did the "search" portal vanish when viewing the full website or was it never there? I thought it was.
The portal is visible here on the reply page.

If you are seeing the new mobile layout but prefer to see the full site "desktop" layout, there is now an option at the very bottom of the footer that will let you switch. It is only visible when you are using a small screen and would normally see the mobile layout.

mobile/desktop layout option

And Tom, on the mobile layout, you can find the Search option under the menu that opens up if you tap the menu icon on the top left part of the page, near the MP logo.

If you're going to have a mobile version, you DESPERATELY need to add in media queries for screen sizes smaller than 560px. The functionality also appears to be template dependent, as I'm not seeing it on certain pages (such as the "Reply to" page).

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
