Just moved to NC, and having serious climbing withdrawals right now. Can't believe how hard it is to find someone to climb with out here. I'll lead a sport 5.10b, follow 5.11a. I'm also looking for any excuse to try a trad climb. I honestly don't like climbing in gyms - I'd much rather freeze my junk off outside. Anyone? |

Anyone?your going to have a hard time findin sport crags in NC. Invest in a rack and sack up. NC is the land of the run out death routes. First ascentions where done by mentally unstable folks out here. With death wishes and played russian roullete instead of rock paper scissors to see who was up to lead. |

There are sport areas in NC and there are more going up as we speak. They just don't get documented or publicized very often. As for the death routes... there are a lot of them here but there are a lot more routes that are well protected. Sure a lot of climbs are a bit spicy but I think you could say that about a lot of traditional areas. But as you say, it is best to invest in a rack. The best climbing in this part of the country is traditional and it would be a shame to miss out on it. NC is a great place to learn how to trad climb because there are so many climbs here that go at 5.6 and under that are really worth doing no matter what grade you climb. The rock is very solid for the most part, and the position is usually pretty amazing. Sometimes route finding and gear can be tricky and the grades are never soft but that just means that once you learn here, you'll be able to climb anywhere. To the OP: There is a gym in Fayetteville that seems to have a pretty good group of climbers that get up to this part of the state quite often. You might just have to go there to meet some people since there isn't any climbing around. If you're in the Raleigh area you should definitely check out TRC. Lot's of outdoor climbers there as well. And once the weather gets a bit better you'll find more people on this forum. Also check out the CCC forum. |

I know there's some development at Gold Coast right now but I don't know of any other sport development. Joe |
