a fact or a fable?

I overheard an REI guide talking to her young teenage students about how when kids start climbing young they will have a bigger ape index than they would if they never climbed. I wonder if there is any truth to that. She was saying " your arms will become abnormally long and hang at almost your knees!" How many mega ape index peeps out there started climbing as kids?

I think you answered your own question. REI guide is an oxymoron.

Genetics would be the true factor.

Although, food and environment can have some affect, this would be negligible compared to your genes.

Not to change the subject , but one more thing she said was referring to sandstone crag, bolted sparringly: "oh this rock is neither sport nor trad, the bolts just pop out if it here too". They bypassed all the burly bolted stations and instead had their tr rigs set with a line threaded through huecos. So I assumed she believes the chopped bolts just popped out on their own? Scary.

Your genes will determine proportion. This can change slightly throughout your life, for no bone or skeletal muscle cell in your body is over ten years old. Your body is continually rebuilding itself.

What you eat and the environment in which you live will have an effect on your overall development (strength, density, etc.) Not getting nutrition sufficient enough will deter proper/full proportion. This would be negligible compared to your genes in giving an "ape index".

Edit to add:
Nutrition being a factor... we would measure this as a contribution not recognised by the eye but measurable nonetheless.

ever think she was just providing some 'entertainment' for the kid? I sure dont take everything adults say to kids as true...

also,
They bypassed all the burly bolted stations and instead had their tr rigs set with a line threaded through huecos. So I assumed she believes the chopped bolts just popped out on their own? Scary.

if the stations are in fact burly bolted stations, maybe thats why there are chopped bolts in the first place? These couldn't be the pre historic rusty coffin plates you mention in the 'chopped' thread are they?

No although i spent my life climbing things growing up (not rock because where i lived there was nowhere to get into it) but trees, buildings etc. I have a -4 ape index =/

You can call me T-Rex, I will also harass anyone out there who says they can't reach a hold when i can.

Hahaha so if the stations are burly that's why they chopped bolts? Noob. Yo let's chop all the 12 sport lines then cos the stations are burly. Climb outside then talk.

The coffin plates are at the pre roof pull crux move. That climb can be lead on gear before that. They chopped the good new bolts and left the rusty old ones.

And if an adult , especially a guide , tells kids some dumb things like that , for fun, no wonder there are so many young idiots walking all over the place. Makes sence. Like the "pillow man" story.

Every single person on my swim team in hs that swam competitively since a kid had a positive ape index. Only 9 on my team so not really statistically robust.

I've added about 1" of ape index/wing span since I started climbing (in my late 20's). I'm not sure how that happened & I doubt it'll continue, but it sure surprised me when I measure it earlier this year.

I added an inch to my ape index by compressing my T10 vertebra and becoming an inch shorter.

How to troll 101

Joan Lee · · Unknown Hometown · Joined Jun 2014 · Points: 140

Trolling is like telling fortune, you got to believe it yourself to sound legit.
Also, a good troll always is intended to get some useful heated discussion from people who otherwise would remain silent. Now that I told you my secrets let's see what you gonna go and do!

To dissect this thread for those who don't get it because of density of their brains: the conversation I overheard is all true so is the situation with the bolt chopping (you cannot make something like that up). With more experience you will he able to tell between bs and real situations in threads, which will make you better at making judgement calls.

With that in mind, compile a list of people who had access to you as a child. for them on a 'highly suspect' influence list. Do not let them talk to more kids.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
