This may have been covered, but I am curious, how is this data being collected? I find it pretty cool BTW!

Based on reported ticks. Unfortunately, people like me mess this up because I climb all the time, but rarely record ticks unless I comment on something. So at best it's loosely accurate.

Would be cool to see how many ticks these plots are based off of.

I ventured a guess that it was also based on temperature of an area: more crowded when it's 60-80 degrees F, less crowded on either side of that.
Probably a good heuristic, in general. (except for ice climbs and alpine routes..)

I agree Dan(s), I live by the popular Rotary Park, and I know many people choose to boulder higher up where it is cooler in the summer months. However, it now also costs to park, and I am sure that is bringing the numbers down to some extent.This could be an interesting analysis to watch over time (from year to year). I guess reporting just ticks over times visiting an overall area just does not fully cut it...
