Asheville, NC - Easy trad / sport multipitch

Hi all,

I'm travelling to meet up with a friend in Asheville. She doesn't climb too much, but I'm trad climbing low 10's out here in Utah, so I'm comfy with trad and all that goes with it, etc, etc.

Is there a place near Asheville that would be cool multipitch route for someone at a 5.6 / 5.7 ish level? If it's sport, that's cool too. Less gear I suppose.

I only have one 60 m rope, so raps need to fit that. Maybe I could borrow a rope, but it would make life simpler if I didn't have to.

She isn't too much of a scaredy-cat, so exposure would be neat.

Thanks and cheers,

Andy

Looking Glass..although it might be pretty toasty until fall and the 1-rope thing might be a bit difficult.

Table Rock in Linville Gorge, it's a bit farther away.

The Daddy in Linville Gorge is a classic. No rapping - just hike down to the bottom of the Amphitheater and climb out.

The Mummy is also down there - a little bit easier and not as long.

It would be a full day to do one of these routes leaving from Asheville but well worth it.

You rap most of the routes at the Nose of Looking Glass with a single rope. The route is 5.8, but the moves are easy one move crux's. Stone Depot has several easy mostly bolted routes as well that can be rapped with a single 60m. You should try to get an early start for the Nose since it gets sun in the afternoon.

Second the reccomendation for stone depot. It is on cedar rock and the hike is a bit long, but it will build up your legs for harder slabbin' later on. A rack of singles will suffice as it has plenty of bolts. you can link pitches easily too.

Thanks a lot!

You guys rock! I'm going to do some digging on the routes / places you recommended.

You have a lot of options at Table Rock as well. Several moderate, multi pitch routes there that will suit you fine and many you can top out and walk off.

I don't think you can rap the nose with a single 60 meter rope? Unless there is a creative way of doing it that I don't know about...

Same here - always needed doubles to rap off the Nose.

You can't rap the last pitch, but I believe you can rap back down the route. Never tried it, but the pitch descriptions here are all 100' except the last.

Tom,
you can rap from the parking lot ledge down with a 70 but not a 60. From the bolts on the edge of the parking lot ledge, you only have a few feet on each side of the rope going back down to the top of the second pitch. A 60 would not reach it.

We've helped several folks off the Nose in the past, that thought they could rap with one 60m. We actually had to rescue a guy that had rapped all the way to his knots and couldnt reach the next station...he was shitting bricks while dangling hundreds of feet up, while his girlfriend was freaking out above at the rap station. Fun times!

Thanks a lot again for all your help.

Unfortunately, it rained all weekend and I wasn't able to find a window of opportunity to climb.

Fortunately, western NC and eastern TN are really beautiful so we enjoyed it in other ways. I'd love to climb out there sometime. Great swimming holes too!

It didn't rain at Looking Glass this weekend. Sorry you weren't able to get out.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
