What can I expect for labor day weekend? Super crowded?
Thinking of taking my dad to the summit for his 58th birthday this weekend. He's a competent follower/belayer. I'm a competent 5.8 leader who's more comfortable in the 5.6 range with him as my follower.
Will the classics be over run? Anyone headed there this weekend and want to link up?
Also, if I go and it's just the pops and I, any recommendations on insuring I get my dad to the summit? I know there is a way from Old man's route but I can't remember what the best route there is. Any input is welcome. I'd like to keep him under 5.6 and under. Pushing above that grad is going to limit how much climbing we actually get to do beyond that.
I may do Conn's West Direct with him as an option, but I want other options as well.
Also, last time I was there we climbed in a party of 4 so we had two ropes. If it's just the two of us do I need a second rope for the rappels or can I get by with just a single 60m. Don't want to haul a second rope up unless I really need it.
Old Man's (5.3) goes to the Summit Ledge -- as does Conn's West (5.4). Old Ladies Route (5.2) is another option. All three of these are popular, so an early start is recommended.
Rapping with a single 60m is possible via Traffic Jam (aptly named b/c of the rap route there), and then down to the Le Gourmet traverse ledge -- and then to the base of the west side of the South Peak.
Le gourmet to Front C and then either finishing on Old Man's or Le Gourmet final pitch are good ways to get to the top
West Pole has some intimidating roofs, but maybe you were just thinking of linking up after first pitch.
Green wall might also be worth a look, an easy 5.7 by Seneca standards, a couple of moves through a bulge.
60 will get you off, on busy weekends, sometimes there will be a fixed line on traffic jam. But if the line is long, hookup with someone to use your rope and get all the way to the bottom instead of three raps, doing that can clear things up, or share a rope at the west pole rap station.
