Hey, I'm headed to the valley for 2-3 weeks at the start of October. I'll be flying into either Fresno or sacramento. What is the best way to get to the valley from one of these locations? Bus, taxi, some sort of public transportation system? Also is it hard to find climbing partners this time of year? Especially for big walls... Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Make a post on MP asking for a rideshare. And no, it's not particularly hard in October to find wall partners. If you took a taxi from Sac town it would probably clean out your bank account. We are talking about 150 miles. A bus is an option.

Bus to Merced, then use these guys?

For the amount of time any kind of public transportation would take, you might be better off renting a car for the duration of your stay. Just make sure the car's insurance coverage includes getting trashed by hungry bears.

Crowds will be thinning out by October, but you should still be able to find partners.

Profile says he is 17 years old...probably not renting a car.
It is probably possible to find a bus from SF to Merced and then use YARTS, but it isn't going to be a quick trip. Might be able to a bus from the Sac airport to the Amtrak station and then take Amtrak to Merced and YARTS from Merced to Yosemite.

I'd say your best bet is to find someone in Sac or SF who is willing to pick you up and take you on their way to the Valley and then try the same on the way back.

Many years ago I recall taking BART to the outskirts of the Bay Area, then Greyhound to Merced, then the YARTS (or whatever they called it back then) bus to the Valley.

Yeah I'm 17 so I can't rent a car. I guess I'll try to figure something out with those bus lines and once the date gets closer I'll post on rideshare aswell. Thanks for the input everyone!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
