Does anyone know if some of the fire roads north of strawberry are open again? A couple weeks ago I tried to go to potters rock (up 5N02) and some of these roads were closed because of the fire.

Chipmunk Flat tends to be very warm even in late season, the sun is strong up there and as long as it's not windy, it should be shorts and T-shirts weather this weekend. Just use sunscreen, I got a really bad sunburn in the late '90s when we were putting up routes.

I spoke with a ranger about the road closures on the north side of 108 mid-highway from the power fire a couple weeks ago. He said they will remain closed until late spring next season because of possible slides in burned areas. There are closure signs up at many fs roads off 108 and bearsley road that leads to the crags out there out to Donnell.

Can still park on 108 and get to some of the closer crags. burst rock and herring ck. dome are open.

anyone know about access to Donnell, Lost World, Bears Lair or Frankensteins?

frankenstein's access is open. looks like anything out towards donnell is closed. not sure where bear's lair is.

Thanks Spit. I went to Frankenstein, nice area! I tried to rap down Nibbler but I think I went down the wrong rap. There were some hunters/gunshots, that kind of scared me a bit after the Ten Sleep shooting.

I went to checkout Donnell, it is indeed closed.

I was going to check that out. How were the temps? Is Burst mostly in the shade?

It's pretty much all in the shade (north facing) but it was in the sixties Saturday so it wasn't too bad at all. Might be getting a little cooler this we so I'd get out there quick! Maybe wear some blaze orange, quite a few hunters around.

Anyone have beta for the topout and walk-off of Pangaea at Lost World? Hoping to avoid some of the death-hike out, but I'm not sure how much elevation gain is left after topping out. Seems like the top of the Cold Joint wall might actually be about level with the start of the Bienvenidos Wall, which means there'd still be a shitload of hiking even after topping out. Anyone know if there's a trail from the topout back to the road/parking lot?

So from the top of Pangea Hike up and climbers left towards a grove of trees and possibly a creek. Continue up and left until you rejoin the trail. Go up or down from there. If you were doing only one route it works ok. But there is so much good stuff there I would recommend making a day of it and go back down for more. The hike out sucks a bit but it gets the legs in shape.

I've only visited once, but can one access the lake by car, and canoe over to the cove below the Cold Joint Wall? We saw some boats down there.

thanks for the beta, John! i'm mostly interested in the topout/walkoff because it seems like it'd be a nice, adventurous way to end a day -- avoiding the hike would be more of a secondary benefit. that said, i went there for the first time this past Saturday and my legs still feel like they could explode any second. to your point, i'd probably want to get in a few other routes first, and then finish off the day on Pangaea

canoeing/boating in would also be really cool, and would certainly add a little more of the adventurous flavor that seems to suit the LW

I think if you get the boat in you should be checking out Atlantis wall with the water starts and such.

Beware of 'Squach too. He has been known to harass unsuspecting climbers in the area.

No, no. Its not Sasquatch. Its El Chupa Cabra. Verrry different "animal". He likes to leave stick teepees all over the place and harass unsuspecting campers. Be afraid.

On another note, you guys make the hike seem like a chore. I actually think its one of the highlights. Besides, between the hike and Chupa, the crowds stay away. Having done that hike virtually every weekend for years during the summer and fall, I can tell you that the first weekend of the year is always a little rough on the legs, but after that you get used to it. Sh*t, try doing the hike with a drill, ropes, and gear for FA'ing, and THEN you can whine about the hike out. :)

Hey I was thinking about camping at pinecrest lake and was wondering if Genesis at Burst rock was close by. And is that the rock with a bunch of short cracks? And is it girlfriend friendly :P

Burst is near Pinecrest. There is a road from Dodge Ridge that cuts over to the road that goes to Burst too. Approach is reasonable and the climbs are at a variety of levels on good rock.
