Careful driving toward and away from Vedauwoo/ BS traffic stops

I am glad this thread has seen some traffic.

David, Good pro, Tony, etc. good points offered, maybe we could quit bashing on each other?! (ie, guideline #1!)

It is not about whether one should drive stoned or not, or whether one should carry weed or hash, or about the effects of driving high...

The idea was to give climbers a heads up that they are being targeted when visiting certain areas. I wouldn't avoid an area just because of it, but travel wisely and maybe dry out for the weekend when going certain places.

I have always distrusted cops, and their 'letter of the law' blind adherence to stupid laws. At least in Colorado you have to do something real to get pulled over. These guys are fabricating reasons to stop green plates, which means that driving perfect won't keep you safe if you are carrying.

Hermosa road is a pretty route back to 287 and the front range if you don't feel like driving through the junkyard called Cheyenne and dodging 18 wheelers on I-25. About 6-8 miles of connector road. Kind of funny that they had a K9 unit back there on that deserted road that no one travels.

Once again, our driver was sober (my vehicle, I was not). We were stopped head on doing about 20-25mph and boxed in by two vehicles.
Reason for stopping was given as either "a report of a pickup stopped on railroad tracks", and "barely anyone takes that road, so we figured we should stop you." Both are BS reasons. We saw one of the same sheriffs on the same road on the way there, indicating that they are doing nothing but poaching that road for green plates. Never asked for registration or insurance, checked 3 of 4 id's, never asked who owned the vehicle even though the driver did not. Overall horribly inconsistent and reeks of bending the law on their part.

This also indicates that [if their report was true] whoever lives by the rail crossing is buddies with the sheriff and is calling in vehicles that are heading toward Tie-siding. They were racing up the road as if to cut us off before we hit 287.

Anyway, keep it civil, be wise and careful. Might be worth traveling sober and not carrying anything if you want to avoid any worse than an intimidation stop.

No, SCUBA diving isn't what you wanna do in an altered state of mind. For other people it's just like driving. Some people suck at it and shouldnt do it sober or high and some.. Well you get it.

Maybe you guys in CO can help me out... Sorry to hijack

I have friends in Maryland who won't go to Colorado. They here thought everyone could buy weed, smoke up and have a great time. In contrast, a group of friends got pulled over in a rental, couldn't find a hotel to smoke pot and hangout in and said the Denver police were out to get them. Any truth to this? I cant find anyone to travel to CO with me. My friends are either single stoners or sober with too much going on and not enough money. This story my friends tell seems false from what I read in the Times and watch on CNN.

The cops aren't out to get you. I don't get why everyone thinks that. 5.5 million people in CO, and with the same census info CO maintains about 20 officers per 10,000 people. So there are approximately 11,000 cops to 5.5 million people(a 1:500 ratio), and everyone thinks cops are out to get them. Cops are out to get the people who are being jackasses. If you roll up from out of state and think that just because weed is legal you can smoke everywhere, then yeah. You'll probably get fucked with. Businesses also don't have to let you smoke on their property just because it is legal in the state. It is still a crime federally and the gov't can seize capital assets.

If you come out, don't be a jackass and you'll be fine. There are plenty of places to smoke.

Well that was worthless information. You're right cops aren't out to get me. I'm a straightedge 5%er who shows up from outta state and spends a shit ton of money on the 100 days of vacation I take a year. NY, NH and Canada are certainly out to get me... Get me to come back year after year.

While I can't say for certain that the friends I speak of were discreet responsible citizens I can say they I trust them to tell a straight story. They told me they're respectful so I believe them. I doubt that couple acted like jackasses. Let's get away from that because.. Like whatever dude. So you're telling me that hotels have smoking rooms but no smoking rooms? Now I understand why the pot tour companies on CNN are making money.

Lastly, there are places to smoke? Every responsible pot smoker I know smokes at their home or in their backyard. This way there's less chance of getting arrested. Hard to keep from being a jackass if you can't smoke in your room or on the chair lift or the mountain or in the park. Again this is second hand information. I haven't been back to Colorado since my wife visited the hospital in Summit County from the altitude.

I have a home in the upper village of Whistler BC. The Sea to Sky.. There's a place I drag my pothead buddies! Wow, im almost cool with the fact BC uses strata fees for socialism.

Bill brings up some good points. If you get high at altitude you could be in for a rude awakening. Seems like we can all put two and two together there.
If you get high while skiing, for example, you are likely to be arrested. & you can see how something might go wrong on the chairlift ride up. Backyards probably seem safe but it's a different game when you're at altitude!

Not to mention all these tourist stoners often arrive in Colorado as reasonable people if they can make it home , they returned zombified, hopefully : leaving some of our vegetation untrammeled

So if you are a "good diver/climber/driver" it's OK to get stoned while at it? Hey, maybe it's even beneficial, increases your awareness or something? We got to run it by Congress and the Board of Transportation/Nursing/Brain surgery/Pilot. I would prefer a stoned doctor. Maybe our next president should be elected based on his knowledge of marijuana dispensaries in Boulder? Parenting should be done while stoned for better results! It should become a requirement to have it on hand at all times while in college!
Get to work people.

Eliot, sorry I should have written words that were polite. My only excuse is I've been with my inlaws for almost three weeks now. A necessary evil to access all the good climbing in the Adirondacks. But damn, they get on my nerves!

Good to hear that my buddies, a married couple in their forties were paranoid. Isn't that a side effect for pot? Haha.. I could see if those guys were long haired hippies or something. I'll be sure to relay this back to the friends I still can travel this information.

It was a candy bar. Funny story that debunks the myth that nothing bad can happen while hign on marijuana. My other favorite being it's just plant.

Eight hours!? Mmmmm.. I wonder how long that would last me? I notice how pot seems to relax people on way down from the alpine or the last few hours of bagged peak. I think that would be fun. But then I fill my head with thoughts from being lost and alone. Maybe a random drug test from OSHA when returning to the city so I'm stil sober. Maybe when I retire.

This is probably the most asinine comment i've read on here... did you know they serve alcohol at the bar at the base of every ski area AND they let people go riding afterwards ANYWAY, even let them on the chairlift!!! Could u image what could go wrong... oh the horrors!

Who's going to arrest you BTW? When was the last time you saw a cop skiing in uniform?

crawl back into your sheltered hole... pls.

Joan Lee wrote: I just read up on some of the side effects of THC (marijuana) and it is : calming, sedating, paranoia and anxiety in some individuals, along with other undesirable effects like lung cancer with long term use. Now that medical marijuana is legal getting in trouble with the law is no longer an issue but some employers will fire you if any of that stuff is detected. I do believe that the high lasts longer than just 3 hours. But if you chose to smoke it, only smoke it at night and NOT before climbing or diving or such activities that require present mind. To get motivated just keep pushing yourselves and do listen to people around you when they tell you to get off your ass.
U told this to Sharma or Graham? Lol... oh right talking out ur ass...

@TBlom.
I honestly appreciate the heads-up.
We have a week in the Tetons/Yellowstone booked in late fall and hopefully the profiling will have eased by then.
It's a shame the WYO S.P. has nothing better to do than hassle tourists (spreading their hard earned money throughout the state) over possession of a couple of doobies.

I see this thread as valuable information in making future travel/climbing/mtn. biking plans. If Utah and Wyoming continue to be asses about CO tourists I will cease travelling and spending there.

Talking about Sharma...The gym grades are soft. It's a good gym don't take me wrong but waaay laid back grades. Sharma was very lucky to be in the right place at the right time. If not for climbing I can see Chris running a dispensary at best. Considering his work ethics (plays a flute while his buddy coiled the rope. Just saying... i don't know about "David San" :)

Whoa don't talk to my friend like that. Just because you haven't seen a woman's ass in many years doesn't mean it is okay to make up stories about their functions. Have some class she makes a good point

I knew it was only a matter of time before she started using multiple accounts so she had someone on her side(s).
P.S. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to the road to recovery.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
