Climber falls in Eldorado Canyon

One thing working in Wayne's favor is the rescue team was already in the canyon on an unrelated accident and were able to reach Wayne in around 20 minutes. Speed of treatment with head injuries is a critical factor. The fact that there is brain activity and response in extremities is very encouraging news.

I don't know anyone who is even 1/4 as tough as Wayne. He's got this. Wayne - love and positive vibes flowing your way man. We still gotta make up for those rain days this spring when you were in WVa. TCB my brother, TCMFB.

To add a little more analysis to Hank's accident scene visit it sounds like a possible case of carabiner gate flutter. What is gate flutter?

youtube.com/watch?v=a3XhgVB…

In rare fall scenarios gate flutter can lead to the rope "jumping" out of the carabiner, the carabiner becoming detached from the protection or the carabiner failing. I was the belayer in an ice climbing accident in the late 90's where a carabiner failed (i.e., complete fracture in the far corner of the basket) probably due to gate flutter the result being a 90' grounder and ensuing rescue in Vail, CO. My partner survived and is climbing strong to this day.

Thanks to his partner Greg, RMR and on scene help Wayne is in a great spot given the circumstances.

Just so you all know, I'm down here with Tess and the mood is good. Ted is also here. Wayne's vital signs and life force are GOOD. He is going to make it. It will take a few days to assess the extent of his brain injury, but so far the swelling is minimal. Keep sending your love. Know that he is in good hands and Tess is doing OK.

Excellent news Keith, I talked to two Doctors yesterday and they hadn't said that.

So good to hear some good reports from the docs. Hang in there Wayne.

Mad respect to Rocky Mountain Rescue. We were in the canyon at the time and the rescue crew was in and out of there so fast that I assumed it was an accident at the picnic area, not a climbing accident with litter evac. Bad ass response.
