What's the deal with the new embedded ads showing up inside people's posts? Are they being added automatically, or are people choosing to include them? I know the site needs to cover its costs, but this is a bit intrusive.

I'm not enjoying them either. Honestly I'd prefer ads off to the side than in between text.

Yes, the ads suck! The best tactic is to pm the users who are including them below their posts, I found that pretty effective.

so you can choose if you want adds in your post or not? Camhead are you suggesting that you PM them to have them delete their comment which then removes the ad?

I agree it's fuckin whack.

The ads were annoying at first, but very quickly you learn to tune them out and they just become part of the background. Now when they start chirping and become animated that would be annoying.

I haven't yet seen the ads. Do you have an example?

I am not sure sending a PM to the people who include them in their posts will do anything. People often ignore PMs.

Even if they do read the PMs there is no guarantee they will listen. What I worry about is pop-up windows that don't have a close button on them. That could be very problematic.

We removed a banner ad at the top of the page and are trying these out instead. The banners were all over the map, and not very relevant.

These new text things are from a select, short list of outdoor gear companies, and they are generally announcing promotions and deals. We're doing our best to keep the ads reasonable in number and in quality, but still allow us to keep MP entirely free.

They are not embedded in anyone's post and I've added tiny borders to make that more clear. They are at the top of some forum pages and occasionally between lots of replies.

The most annoying one is the epicTV video ad on the main page. It automatically plays with sound every time I visit this page. ahhhhhhh

We're working on them to fix that - it's not supposed to happen. They have nice content but bad bugs... You can gang on up them to increase the pressure to fix it... I've asked them to "Stop Ford (and others) from having sound in your ad units". epictv.com/content/contact-us

Yes, pm-ing users works well. If that doesn't work, contact an admin, and they'll give you a refund of your mp membership fees.

I knew those dues would be useful for something...

Thanks for the clarification, Nick. The borders help a bit. I don't love the ads, but I'm glad to hear it's not some new affiliate marketing BS infecting the site.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
