Description Suggest change

Dumplingtown Hill is one of Southern New Hampshire's lost and forgotten crags. While not a major climbing destination, The Dump is a convenient spot for adventurous locals seeking a quick session or those who wish to avoid the crowds at Pawtuckaway.

The Dump is a short crag that runs parallel to the Rockingham Recreation Trail, which is used for access. Ranging in height from 12' to 50', it offers a wide variety of routes and boulder problems that range in difficulty from 5.5 to 5.12 and V0 to V9, respectively. Most of the lines here are stiff, but can fun nonetheless.

Dumplingtown Hill is sun-facing, so most areas dry up rather quickly. Boulders tend to have the lowest dry times, whereas low-angle slabs often require more patience due to groundwater seepage. Fortuitously, there are several nearby weather sensors that allow easy access to real-time precipitation and humidity info. The closest of these is linked below.

Area History

All of the routes here have been either lead on gear, top roped, or (possibly) soloed. With the exception of Can the Jingo (5.10 A1 PG13), every gear line has gone free. Depending on your level of bravery, these lines can make for spicy highball boulders.

The ethics of the crag forbid the use of bolts and pins.

NOTE: Mack Johnson, who cleaned and FA'd a number of the routes here, writes: "I found The Dump here on MP and am thrilled that the area is getting use, and that the traditional style of the cliff has been maintained. John Godfrey showed me the cliff when I lived in southern New Hampshire in the 1980's. At the time I was what is now called a "trad" climber..., and the "Dump" was developed in headpoint style (long before that term existed too)."

... [routes and problems were] scrubbed and cleaned ...thoroughly on rappel, then [we] tried to lead without rehearsal. Bagels and Locks, Riplash, Stone Zoo and Bruisemaster were FAed in this way. Some were scrubbed and TRed, then led later.

Getting There Suggest change

The parking lot is located at 88 Depot Road in Candia, which is about a mile away from State Route 101. Exits 3 and 4 are both ten minutes away from the lot, making The Dump a convenient after-work stop for highway commuters. Once you've arrived, cross the road and walk along the Rockingham Recreational Trail for 0.5 miles. This will bring you to The Left End, which is the closest major area. The farthest major area (The Gnar) is 0.75 miles from the lot. Some approaches can be steep and strenuous, but a good number of climbs are only a few minutes' walk from the trail.
