im looking for a job in chattanooga that would involve use of ropes and looking for suggestions on what fields to search in. i'm thinking my best bet (other than a climbing related job ie working at a gym) would be either tree climbing/cutting or window washing, but am also open to suggestions. i have experience with ropes in climbing, anchor building, route development (installing bolts for sport climbing and bolted anchors, i have only personally installed sleeve bolts, but i am familiar with wedge bolts, 5 piece bolts, although not as much with compression bolts, drilled angles, and glue-ins). are there any other climbers out there who have found jobs where they get to use their climbing skills in their profession (other than guides... i have a lot of the experience from climbing regularly with a friend who is AMGA certified but am not particularly interested in jumping through the hoops to get certified)?

I think it has to do with television and movie sets. Also, a rigging job in industry might be up your alley, even though it doesn't use a lot of ropes. A "rigger" lifts and moves heavy objects. Comealongs, chainfalls, slings, cables, shackles, cranes, etc.

Look into rope access jobs. There is an excellent training center in Chattanooga from what I hear. Im planning on attending this winter.

that sounds like a fun job that would allow me to use my climbing skills professionally but also seems like i would need many certifications to get a job and again i'm not looking to jump through a bunch of hoops just for some certification.

Work on power generating wind turbines
Bridge Inspections
Cell Tower work
Commercial paint/caulking work

Lots of opportunity for rope access work BUT, nearly every industry now requires IRATA or SPRAT training. It has become a necessity, and with it, the purchase of lots of specialized gear, harnesses, and stuff. Most of your regular rock climbing gear won't suffice.

A few industries that haven't caught up yet: window washing and rock n roll rigging.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
