New cafe in Rumney

New cafe just opened in Rumney... Rumney Rocks Bistro. Had a great post-climbing meal there the other day. Great food prepared with local produce, good quantities and a selection of cold beer (with menu additions to come, say the owners). It's on the right, just before you get back to the highway (ie on your way out). These guys are just starting out, give them a try if you're looking for somewhere to eat or just have a beer on the patio... (No connection to the place, just a satisfied patron!)

Is it at the restaurant that was for sale for awhile?

It is the place that's been for sale for a while. (Years, I think)

My friends and I were their first customers after their soft opening. We showed up on a whim, and were a little early for dinner. The staff was kind enough to let us hang out on the patio and drink their beer while waiting for the kitchen to open.

The food was good, the beer selection was good, and the people were friendly. It's super convenient on your way out of the crag. I'll be going back for sure.

I generally don't climb at Rumney anymore but great idea!!

Bill, you may not have, but did you per chance notice if they had any vegan offerings on their menu?

The "other cafe" you speak of is called the Common Cafe, and they actually do dinner (wed-sun) now. They just redid the upstairs and there is a bar and tables. They serve pizza every night and have a number of daily specials. I had the pizza there and it was great! Way better than Miguel's (for those making the comparison).

The owner Brian is a great guy and the place is beautiful even just to hangout in. Unfortunately, Brian looked into setting up camping in the back but he couldn't get it to work out, so not quite Miguel's of the north.

First, I wish the owners luck and hope they do well. I will give them a chance as they should be given - however really like the Common Cafe locally. A lot of times I actually head to the Panther Pub in downtown Plymouth. Good beers and pub grub.

This building has been around for at least 25 years and was actually a pretty busy place at times. It never had any updating and was pretty old, tired and dirty when it closed. I wouldn't even drink a beer outta a glass!

Reasonable prices will be the key to the new owners success! Let's hope it's not bistro pricing! Looking forward to stopping in soon.

That's the one, good to know! Haven't been able to make it out to Rumney yet this year (it's a bit of a haul for us). Good to see he's thriving, not just surviving! :) We typically stay for 3 or 4 days and the last two times out have stayed upstairs from the Cafe. Very basic and convenient. Brian seems like a real nice guy and always greets us with a smile.

I miss the old general store... that place was the shit. I still have one of his Rumney Rocks tees too.

I've been to the new place a few times now too, and I second the recommendation. Maybe a little more pricey than some of the other options around (though not by much), but the food is really, really, really good.

Do you mean when it was owned by the hyper guy in the super tight white T shirt who's sandwiches were so bad you couldn't even eat them if you were starving, or the fat melancholic guy who owned it before that (and I think for a little while again after the hyper guy) The latest owner seems much better, made a little place where you could sit down and seems to have a better sense of food that climbers might eat.

I loved Katie's Compost Cafe, but the hours weren't regular enough and being outside the bugs would nail you if you wanted to hang out. Fantastic food and people though. I think she opened local business owners minds to the possibilities of catering better to climbers. The Common Cafe has done well with the concept.

Haha would have been late nineties early 2000's... idk we always got the pastry/pies beers and your right the sammies weren't great but the place had some charm. It was a one stop shop which was nice.

That would be the era of Mr Melancholia, probably. His sandwiches were semi edible, unlike the one from the hyper guy. The thing about the hyper guy is that he was super proud of his food and how he had run several delis before. He used the worst, cheapest ingredients though. Even his cookies, when I got suckered into buying them, ended up getting fed to the squirrels. They didn't seem to beg as much afterwards.

HAHAHA... I was still young enough to eat just about anything w/o issues back in those days.

Hope this place stays open unlike the last few at that location. I've been climbing at Rumney for about 6 years now and I've seen at least 3, maybe 4 different restaurants at that location now not to mention another one that used to be open directly across the street.

Yeah, let's hope the quality is as good as the OP experienced. Those others didn't deserve to stay in business. I could tell they were going to fold the first time I went in them. The last one in that location was called "Bear Nothing" or something similar, with a chintzy bear theme. Who comes up with these ideas? They didn't even have a nice fierce looking stuffed grizzly or anything. At least when it was called 'Steve's' and was somewhat successful, it was full of extremely cute high school girl waitresses (I'm looking, but I know I shouldn't be, lol). I think there ended up being a scandal with the owner and one of them or something that contributed to it shutting down and being sold.

I don't think it was the bear one but the one I went into back in 2011 or 2012 was actually pretty good. Was like a pub. They had good food, good menu, good beer and had a pool table and big buck hunter and stuff. We were the only ones in there so the staff treated us really well too. I was bummed they closed because they were much better than any other of the others I'd seen there (or across the street).

I've never really thought any business had much of a chance in that town... I thought compost might but then again I never visited so what does that say?
