I assume that : 1. You are going on this "hike" alone 2. That you intend to abseil with a prussik cord 3. That you are a beginner at recreational abseil /climbing 4. That you have little or no knowledge about backup safety devices such as autoblock knots and the correct ratio of prussik/autoblock cord to primary rope 5. That you have not sought advice from a professional organisation.
1+2+3+4+5 = multiple risk factors = disaster = another news item for discussion. ...
Take a tag line (aka retrieval cord) that is 6mm perlon that is as long as your rope. Rig it at the rappel master point as explained below. Be careful. It must be rigged and used correctly or the result is a fatality. Practice somewhere safe to make sure that you have it wired.
8mm cord is more than suffice to rappel on. Yes, use an auto block - cannot fathom a reason why an autoblock/prusik would not slow the descent. This is a cautiously stupid question to ask. When in doubt, just hike it out - bring the fat rope. Seriously? Is this an international discussion board? Or are we intentionally giving American's a lazy name?
