Hi how's it going? My roommate and I are passing through Tahoe 13-14 July on our way home to lovely Utah. I'd like to do some climbing if there's time, but we've never been to Tahoe so I don't know what to expect. I'd love advice on moderate sport climbs--particularly routes near the lake or one of the main roads (like I-80, or 89) and relatively easy to find. Is that realistic? 90% of my climbing has all been in Utah, so I apologize for my lack of familiarity.
Additionally, if you'd be interested in climbing with us, you can pm me. I'm happy leading 5.9 sport (at least by Utah standards), but can follow harder/trad. My roommate follows.
And if climbing doesn't work out, I hear the lake is pretty rad too :)
I'm not much of a sport climber, but if I were passing through here would be my plan:
Stop at Indian Springs (though it might be a little hot in the afternoon) the first day. And continue to Truckee for the night. Wake up and head to Donner Pass for a full day.
Some other areas that might work are: The Emeralds Big Chief Rainbow Lover's Leap (on Hwy 50 could also work, but not the most direct route)
If you have any questions or want to get on some trad lines let me know.
Hey thanks, Pat. I was looking at the Big Chief routes earlier, Indian Springs looks cool too. We'll probably just scope it out when we get there and see what's doable. I'll be back end of August-- I'll bring my rack and I'll hit you up about those trad lines :)
Yo Lindsey - definitely check out the Big Chief Area, plenty of clip ups there. Big Chief will be good until the afternoon, and Light Deprivation Buttress should provide shade in the heat of the day. The road in can be done in pretty much any vehicle.
Also if you want to try harder trad routes check out Snowshed wall. Many of the routes can be easily TR'd by walking around the west side of the cliff.
