I'd even consider ponying up for one of these.

Dylan and/or Doug,

So is a handsaw ok? This is the question I have been asking for the last day-and-a-half. Other than Jon saying he thinks it's ok, I haven't seen anyone else address the issue and since Jon doesn't appear to have the intimate knowledge of DNR policy that you guys have; I was hoping one of you guys that seem to have that expertise would pipe in on it...If we show up with a bow saw or two-man crosscut will there be any backlash?

Of course another tack we could take is to attack one of the huge contributors to the problem, which is large group size - seems like every year the big groups get both bigger and more common. Maybe we could convince folks to self-police and limit group size to less than six (especially in the more crowded and sensitive areas of the park). I think this would have a huge impact on the erosion problem.

Have you been reading a lot of Kafka lately?

One might argue that we're ALL living in Kafka's world.

The last time I discussed this with the Supt was April. In response to someone's request to help clear the CCC trail he said "Thanks for volunteering to help out with the trees on the CCC trail. This is the first I have heard of them. Can you tell me exactly where they are located and how large they are? We will try and get them cut up this week. Volunteers who operate chainsaws on state land are required to have a FISTA certified chainsaw course."

He has told me this is required more than once. He has also told me and Dobbe that minor brush clearing along climbers' trails is OK, and I find elsewhere that the DNR tells hunters they are allowed to do "minor" brush clearing. I would consider returning Gill's base to the state it has been in for decades "minor".

For the long run, and the larger picture of climbers' relation with the DNR, I'd like to take a laundry list of areas that need attention to the DNR. That doesn't particularly have to be before we address Gill's.

When Doug and I were talking with the Supt Schmelzer, I had mentioned that I wanted to use the log that fell across the CCC trail at the top of the bluff to replace the retention log at the base. He didn't object to the proposal in the email.

Even though I got lazy and forgot about it (because I just start climbing every weekend that I get to the lake), the erosion project has silent consent.

I'm a bit far away for a weeknight assist, but I'll catch up with James this weekend to see if I can be of help any other way.

Doug, do you want to start a new thread with the "maintenance list", or should we do it in this thread?

Jon, thanks for making the conversation happen. Good seeing you last Sunday.

Still on for tomorrow? Meeting when, where?

415 at the CCC lot. If you can't make it there by then, head up to the base of gills and we should be there unless we are harvesting a dead timber in the woods.

Has a new date been proposed?

James Schroeder · · Fort Collins, CO · Joined May 2002 · Points: 3,166

How about Monday the 14th?

EDITED: I won't be here on the 21st.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
