Deep Water Solo in Michigan U.P.?

Hey all,

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but does anyone know if this is a thing? Specifically I'm thinking around the Pictured Rocks area. I haven't been able to find barely any discussion about climbing there (other than ice climbing), which makes me somewhat pessimistic, but it looks like there's some potential so I figured I would ask around. I haven't been up there in years and can't recall if I saw any climbable areas. Is it possible? Is it allowed? Would it be any good?

Incidentally, if anyone wants to partner up for some U.P. sport climbing, please contact me. I'm in the area for the month of July before I head back to CO, and already getting antsy without my climbing fix. Have gear, will travel.

The rock in PRNL sucks for climbing and I believe not allowed.

I was totally just going to ask about solo climbing at Picture Rock, my physical therapist having mentioned the rock formations to me, but as he's not a climber and was just trying to help this Colorado gal (who's transplanted to Toledo temporarily) get some climbing joy out here, he wanted to make sure I'd asked someone first. Mountain Project is my go-to when I need more info. I recently checked out a quarry in Perrysburg, got all excited because...well...rocks...(especially in this area) and, um, no. I heard they do repelling there, but it looks like something for grade school kids, MAYBE. Def no climbing and too sketch for bouldering. The rocks come out from their position too easily. I would settle for bouldering here, but looks like it's urban stuff only... or tree climbing, lol.

From Toledo, you're probably closer to great climbing in New River Gorge or other places in KY, TN, WV than you are to Pictured Rocks. Detroit to Pictured Rocks area used to take me 6-7 hours when I lived up that way. Toledo would be another 45 minutes or so.

da 'UP"? Lake Superior? that's like wetsuit temp water any time of year! Head south to NRG or other spots where they can do it with a bit of comfort.

Yes there is just a bit further west from Pictured Rocks in Marquette!

Yeah you'd better have a real thick wet suit this time of year. That lake is never warm.

Last few years no wetsuit needed- last Sunday people were swimming!

I looked into this once and it's illegal to rock climb but when the ice comes in it fair game. And ya the water is always cool.

Yo Connor, did you find anything else in the last couple of years? Tettegouche State park looks like it has some great potential, but that's a far drive for us mitten-bound folk.

Thanks!
