Are there any shady crags in the boston area? Went up to Red Rocks today hoping to find some cooler air and we were absolutely melting still. As far as I know everything really is in full sun. Anyone know of any secret shady spots? Looking for litterly any type of climbing at any grade below 11. Advice appreciated.

There's some good shade at Hammond Pond. I was there last weekend climbing at the lower walls and the sun wasn't bad at all.

When I first read this, I thought you were looking for "shady" crags where you could find drugs or other nefarious activities. There are plenty of those in Boston too....

you might have luck at Crow Hill out near Fitchburg. MIT outing club puts out a good guide book for the Boston area called Boston Rocks.

College rock is in the shade and so is Pawtuckaway which is mostly bouldering. The J and K wall are in the shade for part of the day at Quincy but it is still pretty hot. Black and white rock at Middlesex fells is shady too. I second the Boston Rocks book it has details on a bunch of places.

As stated crow hill is in the shade as well as p way, rumney, farley, rose ledge, Mormon, you just have to drive a little bit.....

Climbing in this weather is pretty shitty everywhere.

At Redrocks though there are smaller crags like Oz, Down Under, and the Pet Slabs that are small enough to remain treed in. Langsford Pond further onto Cape Ann is shady too.

July kind of sucks for climbing in New England though.

Yea I noticed those, and I kind of figured... thanks for the advice. Can't stand to sit inside so I suppose I'll just suck up the heat..

If I'm not sporting it up at Farley/Rumney I'm relaxing at Hammond to boulder for sure, very easy to find shade there. I've noticed the alcove can be cooler than temple's side too and less buggy no idea why though. A group of us will be there Sunday if you wanna stack pads (no idea what time yet). We'll be on Pusherman's/Temple Overhang side.

Edit: may be flying solo there Saturday too
