2014 AAC International Climbers Meet

Each year the American Alpine Club hosts the International Climbers Meet in Yosemite California.

As a way to communicate before the event I like to use MountainProject as a gathering place.
This is a place for people to discuss things (routes you want to do, carpooling/ride share, gear, etc.).
You can ask questions about anything from route information to public transit.
Some folks from California may have some good answers to these questions!

And use the wonderful resource (that's free!) called MountainProject.
Look up routes, see beta photos, etc. for Yosemite National Park. Home of the… Nose!

To check out the routes click on the blue link below:

Yosemite Valley Climbing Routes

Here are public transit links:

Sacramento Airport

Greyhound Bus Service

YARTS Yosemite area transit

Amtrak Transit

October in the mighty Yosemite can be from very hot to very cold 90F-32F (32C—0C).
Bring some clothing for all conditions!

A standard or single climbing rack of cams, nuts, slings, draws, and a 60-70m rope is
more or less what to bring. People share big cams, and it always works out.
Don't forget your favorite camping coffee mug, fork, spoon, plate and bowl!

Looking forward to seeing everyone this year!

About:

—American Alpine Club seeks climbers to join the 2014 International Climbers’ Meet—

The American Alpine Club would like to extend an invitation to qualified climbers to participate in the annual International Climbers’ Meet (ICM). At least two years experience of technical rock climbing, experience with placement and removal of protection, multi-pitch rope management, and the ability to follow sustained 5.8 granite is mandatory. The ICM is held the week of October 6 - October 11, 2014 in Yosemite Valley. The goal is to host a diverse group of climbing abilities from a multitude of countries. American Alpine Club members from the U.S. will be participating again this year.

Event Details:

The fee for all participants is $415 USD per person.

Participants provide their own transportation to Yosemite Valley, California.

Your fee includes:

Seven nights and six days camping at secluded Yellow Pines camp ground
Three catered meals per day
Five days of climbing in spectacular Yosemite Valley
One day of a stewardship project for Yosemite Valley National Park
Nightly campfire for storytelling, socializing, and general carousing
Partner with other participants or experienced host climbers
Carpooling opportunities and transportation information for travel to Yosemite

Last year's meet was an amazing adventure. Yosemite Park closed one week before the meet started. 50 participants traveled to the Eastern Sierra where we climbed, camped, watched movies on the side of a van, and bonded over the fact that no matter what happens, climbers will still climb. Although we do not anticipate closure of Yosemite Vally, the show will go on no matter the circumstances.

Hi everyone, Im still deciding and getting funds for the meeting.
Also Im getting back in form, but lately I don't have a climbing partner
here in Ensenada Mexico. So If anyone feels like coming and explore Baja climbing, here I am. I want to explore canon tajo that I have heard its awesome granite.
Kind Regards to everyone

Hi all

This is a dream come true. I will be representing The Swedish Climbing Federation at the meet this year. Its the first time for me in the US so that will be a little adventure, but to be climbing in one of the most fabled climbing locations ever will be spectacular. I'm really eager!

So to some practical questions:

  • Were should I fly? Sacramento, San Francisco or some other place? Its leaning towards San Francisco but nothing is booked yet.
  • Is there someone driving past one of the airport that could pick me up, and in that case when would I need to be there? I have been looking at flights that arrive Saturday evening and hopefully I could do some quick gearshopping before going to the park.
  • Since I reckon there will be few opportunities for me to return I think I will stay for one extra week. Is that possible and is there anyone else having the same thoughts? In that case it would be nice if we could share some stuff. Tent, ropes and some gear would be nice to share to make my backpack less bulky on the planes.

More questions will probably come.

San Francisco is a far more major airport than Sacramento -- so probably easier (and likely cheaper) to fly into and out of SFO. Driving time looks like about 3h30 hours from San Francisco, but 3 hours from Sacramento -- not a lot different.

I've booked my flights into/out of San Francisco, myself.

Hey yeah I'm flying into Fresno arrive 18.00 on Friday 3rd and flying back on 21st from Fresno.
I'd be up for climbing the week after the course up until I leave. I wanted to come over for 2/3 weeks as flights cost abit.... I was going to bring a 70m rope and most my trad gear I might need. Going to be a squeeze.

I disagree. Sac airport is much easier in and out, and the drive is both shorter and more pleasant from Sac than from SF. I have often found fares to be pretty similar between the two as well. The only real benefit I see to flying into SF is that you may be more likely to find a ride to the Valley if not renting a car.

Agree. Unless you want to spend time in the city there are a lot of disadvantages to using SFO. Rental cars are more $$. Traffic is worse. Tolls to get acrosss the bay. Oakland and San Jose are worthwile considering.

Nice answers, thanks!

So the flight is now booked to San Francisco. I will arrive Thursday evening and leave Saturday morning, 18th.
I suspect I will be doing some gearshopping and sightseeing Friday and Saturday and leave for Yosemite on Sunday, and then to stay in the park till I go home.

So I'm still up for carpooling or bus transfer to/from the park!

The next step for me now would be to do a basic check on my gear to see how much it totals up to. I suspect it will be a lot :-)

My experience was for booking flights from Canada -- far easier to find flights into/out of SFO than SAC. I figured the same would probably be true of off-continent. For domestic flights, I could see the advantages of SAC.

Getting excited yet?
If not… Here is a picture to help out!

Did I mention the five minute approach to this 5 pitch climb?

No airport for me, I'll be driving from Idaho. Planning on leaving on October 4, but could leave as early as September 30 if someone wants to climb prior to the ICM. Will be bring full gear. If you are somewhere near my route and need a ride, please contact me through Moutain Project. Cheers, IdahoBob

Hi all,
I'm probably driving to the valley with a friend the weekend prior to the meet, but I'll leave on the 12th at 12:20am out of SFO and wondered if anyone else is headed in that direction on the 11th. I could use a ride or am happy to share gas $!

Or if anybody can give me tips on how to make my way down there in time for my international flight would be great too!

thanks!
sam

Hi all,

I'm super psyched to be joining you all for this year's meet! I'm planning on flying out on the evening of the 4th or during the 5th from Denver to Sacramento or SFO, although if anyone is planning on driving through Denver over that weekend I'd love to catch a ride. I haven't booked any flights yet, but if anyone wants to carpool to or from the airport from Yosemite on the 12th, let me know. I most likely will be renting a car if I wind up flying in.

Climb!

David and I are excited to be coming. I booked our flight from Asheville, NC, to Sacramento on Delta. I bet there will be some other ICM folks on that flight. Sat. 10/4, returning on the redeye 10/12. Oh boy. I can't get PayPal to work, any hints?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
