Hey! We are passing through Butte and Bozeman on the way down to WY to climb. Any recommendations for easier sport climbing in either locations? (5.7-5.10)?
Bear Canyon and Bozeman Pass are both right outside of Bozeman and good sport climbing areas. Bear Canyon is more on the easier side of things but both have routes from 5.6/7 to 5.13+. You can stop by Spire Climbing Center in town for beta.
The Foyer at Natural Bridge has a lot of worthwhile climbs in that range. Its a long drive but the scenery alone is worth it. Another option is Bozeman pass, lots of 5.10 there
Butte's sport climbing is really lacking. The rock just doesn't lend itself well. Small holds on slabs mostly. There are a few really great harder lines, but they're scattered about the area. If you like slab climbing, I can help you find some fun ones.
The best bet for sport if you needed to kill an hour is to take the old highway two out of town. New Rock and Roadside are right in the highway and are well bolted. Be sure to try "Truth or Friction" at roadside.
If you have a pad, the even better idea is to boulder. The bouldering here is really great.
